A Beautiful Wonder

On this 50th anniversary of Earth Day, let’s pause and take a look at mankind’s home. Worth protecting, I’d say.

You Otter Try It

The ocean is beautiful! We go once in awhile for a short 45-minute trip there for lunch on the wharf and discussions with the wildlife–birds, sea critters, and people. Recently I was captivated by a young sea otter who relaxed on the pier’s supports while Mom brought him lunch, then snoozed between attempts at exercising his vocal cords. My friend Christine Murphy, who was more than handy with a camera, took the picture below. No matter how tired or stressed I am, it’s amazing how little episodes in nature like this can refresh me, pulling me out of myself and back into this wonderful world I’m such a small part of.

Worth Taking Care of

“Earthrise,” taken on Christmas Eve 1968 from aboard Apollo 8, by astronaut William Anders, who responded to fellow astronaut Frank Borman’s comment about a picture, grabbed a camera, and took this breathtaking photo. It shows our home planet just appearing over the moon’s horizon.

Beautiful sight, isn’t it? And worth taking care of.

A Delightful Photo

To end my week of positive posts, I offer you this delightful picture for no other reason than enjoyment.

Is There An Important Senior in Your Life?

Summer can be lonely for older people, especially those who live alone or in nursing homes or senior centers.  It’s a time when families go to the beach or festivals, have friends over for BBQs, and take day-trips.  Often a senior will hear about these activities from their family members or from others in their living facility.  But they’re seldom invited to join in.  This summer, invite Grandpa or Great-Aunt Agnes along on some of your activities.  If they aren’t able to participate, plan some of your activities around them.  Go to the senior center and play cards or board games with your loved one and others whose company she enjoys.  Bring ice cream and cookies to his home and spend the evening.  Take her outside under a shade tree and help her organize or redo her address book.  Bring that box of loose family photos that have been passed along over the generations and ask him to identify the people and tell you about them.  How to make a happy summer for your loved one: just spend some quality time together.

By the way, today is National Senior Citizens Day. Is there someone in your life you should call or visit today?

Women, Sex, and Photos

Someone please explain the facts of life to me. Whether it’s news or a Hollywood event, there’s a big difference in how men and women are photographed. The cameras will capture a male through a full-body shot and move forward to his upper body, often including his arm around a woman and a bright smile.  Photos of women are different, though. They  often start at the feet and move slowly up the body, capturing legs, butt, and boobs.

Maybe we’re just being shown the lovely/extravagant/outrageous dress the woman is wearing. But the men don’t always wear conservative business suits. Maybe it’s because the women strike model-poses that emphasize their figure. But the men strike manly poses and do manly things, like encircling their “arm candy.”  Could it be that the women enjoy the attention more than men?  Come on…we’re talking prominent people who earn a living based largely on their looks.

It’s time for camera-people to start at the men’s shoes and work slowly up, panning slowly past the crouch and up past the trim belly and tight butt and up to the $500 haircut.

No, I guess not, because that might be considered obscene.

An Upper for a Downer Day

Having a Blue Monday?  Some days we feel there’s nothing but trouble and evil in the world.  When you have one of those days, take a look at these photos.  They’ll remind you that this really is a pretty good world, after all.

The file will appear as a jpeg file ready for you to open.  It’s a safe download of thumbnails.  Double-click on the pictures to enlarge.
