Personal: My Mom

My mother had three kids, kept a spotless house, worked in the family business, dealt with laundry down steep cement steps in a dank, unfinished basement using a ringer washer and depending on a clothesline and sunshine, lived through the death of her youngest as an infant, managed questionable activities of her son, and taught independence to her physically disabled daughter. She has been gone for many, many years, but she lives on in the hearts of the kids who survive her. On Mother’s Day, I reflect on her love for us.

A Delightful Photo

To end my week of positive posts, I offer you this delightful picture for no other reason than enjoyment.

It’s a Special Day for Me: a Personal Note

Today would have been my 37th wedding anniversary. The years were filled with “for better” and “for worse,” “sickness” and “health.” We shared bringing new life into this world and seeing cherished loved ones move onto the next. We had some fierce disagreements and did a lot of forgiving–of each other and of ourselves. We enjoyed adventures together and, as we aged, commiserated with the fact that, more and more often, our bodies laughed at us and asked us, “You think you’re going to do WHAT?!”  We comforted each other over the estrangement of a friend or relative, then rejoiced with each other over reconciliation with them.

We helped each other adapt to severe changes in our lives, cried mutual tears of joy at our son’s wedding–and grieved over his divorce–exchanged laughter and knowing looks when hearing a young person’s exact, well laid-out plans for the future, and had our hearts melt at a wagging tail, four paws, and big brown eyes that say, “I’d love you even if you were to beat me.”  We worked as a team through hardship, tragedy, heartbreak, and financial difficulties and came out closer as a result.

The “worse” and “sickness” we vowed to get through was not fun or easy, but we got through it because we had one other. Besides, we always focused on the “better” and the “health,” letting the other simply fade away. That’s called Living Life.

We had only 35 years together here on Earth. He has moved on, leaving me with memories and family who carry on his love for me.

I miss you, Frank, but thank you for the years we did have.  And for the memories that sustain me.

Our Beautiful, Endangered Oceans

Yesterday was World Oceans Day, calling attention to our oceans and how to appreciate and take care of them and inviting us to do so all year long.  This year the emphasis is on all the plastic accumulating in those  magnificent bodies of water. So I offer you this small reflection:

40,000 garbage trucks filled with plastic = 270,000 tons of it floating around our oceans. That’s what the current estimate is. And that’s a conservative guess, since fish, birds, and other species eat a good amount of it. It’s unsightly and deadly for the critters who eat it or get hopelessly entangled in it.  It’s not healthy for humans, either.

This is something to think about next time we’re about to toss a plastic bottle cap, bag, food wrapper, or other item onto the roadway or gutter, where it can wash into the waterways leading to the ocean.  Or tossing those items off of a boat or bridge.

The item can’t be that heavy to hold onto until you see the next recycling container.

Earth: Movies vs. Real-Life

All those end-of-the-world movies have one thing in common: pictures of the Earth devastated by too much ice, smoke, heat, pollution…you name it.  Dumb, right?  Well,   take a look at this short video of what our home planet looks like today.

A Natural Blueblood!

I am constantly awed by nature–its power and beauty make me feel part of something wonderful and real.  If you live in the Western hemisphere, we’re experiencing something that hasn’t happened in 152 years.  The Super Blue Blood Moon is a combination of lunar eclipse, blood moon, and super moon all rolled into one.  Last night it lit up the sky as though it were dawn, and it’s still visible.  Go out and take a look.

Lurking in your Phone….

This is about Androids, BUT it can apply to any phone. There are doppelgangers waiting to invade your phone. Those are apps that look like the real thing (similar to ones you know and trust) but are fake ones trying to ensnare you.  For example, doesn’t “Lovely Wallpaper” sound safe and innocent? NOT! Once you download these things they can do all sorts of stuffs, even when you aren’t on your phone: steal your passwords, user names, and credit card and banking information; send texts that look like they’re coming from you; track you as you wander about; even take pictures of you.

Once you’ve downloaded one of these demons it’s too late simply to change your password–they’re already in. You have to delete the app, then wipe your phone.

Be careful, then, of the apps you download.  First check out the company and make sure it’s reputable, legitimate, and trustworthy. Don’t assume that, since you found it in the Google store, it’s okay.Google is busy trying to clean out their store from these things, and keep it clean–a huge task.

It’s disgusting that there are people out there who profit from our carelessness. Let’s not give them the chance.

Spring Headfirst

Today, nothing heavy, no suggestions for action.  Today, on the first day of Spring, I just want you to enjoy this picture and immerse yourself in the beauty, new life, and promises of the season. Then, spring headfirst into a joyous day.

Picture those Important Family Activities

With upcoming family activities–graduation, wedding, vacation trips–you may be looking for new camera equipment. Consider a bag that has a built-in solar charger. Both it and rechargeable batteries are convenient for you and healthy for the Earth.
