Idea for a Party

Here’s an idea: have an Immigrant Party and invite your immigrant friends.  Don’t have any?  Sure you do.  All of our kinfolk came from somewhere other than the U.S.  Ask your guests to come ready to share their family history—why they came to the U.S., where they landed, what type of community they lived in here, the support system they had (church? neighbors from the same part of the world?), languages spoken at home, hardships they encountered here, what they went through to gain citizenship.  Maybe each guest could bring pictures of people, places, and documents, as well as a family keepsake that reminds them of those times.  You might even want to ask people to bring food to share from one of the cultures each guest represents.

Spend the evening sharing your food and your stories.  By the end of the night it will be very clear why you are all friends—because we’ve been given the oceans not as an obstacle to divide us but as a path to bring us together.

Pity Poor Kellyanne Conway

I’m starting to feel sorry for Kellyanne Conway.  She keeps mis-speaking and having to defend what she thought President Trump meant by what he said.  She’s on the front lines in the war with the media, demonstrators, the courts, Democrats, and even some Republicans.  It’s taking its toll; she’s exhausted.  Just compare the two pictures below.  I think, for the sake of her own health and for her family, she should resign and let her boss find someone else to  do the job.

Before working for Candidate Trump:

Woman, Light a Fire!

Violence! Fighting! Rock-throwing! Vandalism! Fires!  These are common events at marches and protests.  There were 470,000 or so people in the Women’s March in DC (and many, many more in other cities, including my home town of San Jose, CA).  And what did they do?  The raised their voices to express their demands for justice, peace, and equality in our country. Women carried signs related to a multitude of social justice issues and expressed their displeasure with a President who has promised (and has already started) to set policies that they see as perpetuating social INjustice.  They sang and chanted, gave and listened to speeches, discussed issues with  those around them, became more and more determined.

They did not riot. Or destroy property.  Or attack each other.

My daughter and granddaughter attended.  My apolitical granddaughter decided  that giving up a planned snow trip and enduring the several-hour bus ride from their New Jersey home to DC was worth it, that this was an historical and meaningful event she wanted to participate in.  My daughter, more political, agreed, and off they went.  See pictures below.

There are several lessons here.  First, women united can light a fire that makes a difference.  Second, the next generation of adults care about the human family.  Third, protests can be peaceful, and they should be if participants are to be taken seriously.

I’m proud of my family’s involvement and of all the 470,000 people in DC and all the others who showed up and spoke up.

Could You Live Like This?

Ever wonder how a farm worker lives? It’s hard, because their wages are low, despite back-breaking work. They make do, although life is far from lavish.

These pictures show the life of farm workers in California: Carlos in Salinas, Lucio in Monterey, Betsy in Oxnard, and Vivaldo in Madera.

It seems to me that these people who are so important to our families’ nutrition should not have to live like this.

Click Away–It Makes Sense

Graduations, weddings, family BBQs…it’s the season for picture-taking.  Feel virtuous about using a digital camera instead of your old film-using one. The Earth benefits as you save money. Since you  store most pictures on your computer and print only some, you use less paper, developing chemicals, and water, and no chemical-laden film.  It makes sense.
