Always Drink Responsibly

Drink responsibly EVERY DAY!   You go to meetings, coffee breaks, PTA functions, and soccer matches, accompanied by the ever-present cup of coffee or bottle of water.  You stop at Starbucks or 7-11 for coffee.  You jog with a bottle of water.  So, care for our planet by lessening the amount of Styrofoam and plastic on the roadsides and in the landfill.  Keep a coffee cup at your desk at work and a commuter mug in your car for use at meetings or filling at Peet’s.  Fill a water bottle on your way out to a game or run.  Keep a couple filled, in the refrigerator or freezer (great for a hot day at an arts festival).  Just be sure to rotate your cups and bottles often, bringing them home for a thorough cleaning to avoid bacteria growth.  This keeps both you and the Earth healthier.

Put Your Fish to Work

Don’t waste that water your fish have enriched with nutrients.  When cleaning the fish tank, use the water on your plants and trees. You think it’s scummy; they think it’s yummy.

Know How to Boil Water?

When boiling water, cover the pan.  This prevents evaporation and makes the water boil faster, thus saving both water and energy.

About that Garbage Disposal…

Use the garbage disposal less. Between faucets washing scraps down the drain while they’re being ground up and the water used to process sewage in treatment plants, some 500,000 gallons of water are wasted daily.  Choose and cook foods which produce little waste, be creative with leftovers, and turn what remains into compost to nourish your plants without a trip to the nursery for plant food.

Cleaning Pools, Spas, and Ponds

Where to drain your swimming pool, spa, or pond for cleaning or repairs?  Not in the creek behind your house or into the street gutter, where it flows into the bay (both are illegal, harmful to the water supply, cause bank erosion). You can run it down the drain, to go through the sewage treatment process, but that wastes it.  OR, instead, let the chlorine evaporate, then use the water to deep soak your lawns and plants.

For Fun–St. Pat’s Day Trivia

Tomorrow everyone is Irish.  We joke, party, and parade in celebration of the Irish (born in England, by the way) St. Patrick.  We turn waterways green and drink green beer.  We wear green and cook special meals.  Did you know that 650,000 American babies have been named Patrick in the last century?  Or that 40 pounds of green dye go into the Chicago River on this day (even more this year)?

Discover more bits of St. Pat trivia at St. Patrick’s Day by the Numbers.

Top o’ the day, to ye.  Have a grand time tomorrow.

Some Info. if You Drink Nestles Brands of Bottled Water

You may not even know that you do.  Nestle brands include Arrowhead, Calistoga, Deer Park, Ice Mountain, Ozarka, Poland Spring, Zephyrhills, Perrier, San Pellegrino, and Pure Life.

Nestle pays $524 a year (that’s all!) to fill bottles that cost us $2.00 each.  They take the water from the San Bernadino National Forest, draining our public watersheds.  They claim that they can do that because water doesn’t belong to anyone, ignoring the fact that the PUBLIC NATIONAL forest that is trying to recover from drought is sustained by that very water.  Topping that, they’re taking the water on an expired lease!

A group called Courage Campaign has taken Nestle to court over this in what, so far, has been a two-year battle.  Nestle is spending an unimaginable amount to fight this–at $2.00 a bottle they can afford it.

If this bothers you as much as it does me, boycott all Nestle products, especially water, and let Nestle know why you’re doing it. You can find their phone number and a contact form at https://www.nestleusa.com/info/contact-us.

We’re talking about OUR water and OUR forests!

Splish-Splash Gate

Is anyone else bothered by all the Trump brand water bottles at every seat during government meetings?  They’re clear as, well, water, in pictures all over the media.  I’m irritated by the fact that taxpayers are forced to buy a Trump product and that this product gets frequent, free, valuable advertising.

On the lighter side: There was Watergate, then Whitewater. Could this be Splish-Splash Gate?  Consider President Trump’s normal demeanor in light of the lyrics to the old Bobby Darin song “Splish Spash.”

A Lunch to Chew On

A simple sandwich takes about 172 gals. of water to make a loaf of bread and lots more for the meat and veggies to go into it.  Save water by using organic lettuce and tomatoes from a sustainable, water-wise garden and make the sandwich open-faced.

Diet Water?!

I didn’t believe it–until I saw it.  Apparently, regular water has too much fat or too many calories (?!).  Anyway, I thought I’d pass on this valuable product to you.
