How to Shop for Tee Shirts

Warmer weather is on its way. Time to dig out the old T-shirts and buy some new ones.  It’s also time to think about what slogans or pictures are on those shirts.  After all, when we dress we often become a walking billboard for what we believe.  One set of beliefs is described by these sayings (actually seen on shirts):  “It’s All About Me;” “Silence is Golden, Duct Tape is Silver;” “Orgy of Hate;” “The last hope for humanity rests on a high powered machine gun;” “A woman’s place is chained to the stove.”  Then there is the fuzzy-headed kid urinating on a person of a clearly definable ethnic origin.  Other beliefs are expressed, of course, by crosses and religious references or Biblical quotes, but also by “I ♥ [person or place],” “World’s Greatest Mom,” “Do random acts of kindness,” and pictures of a grandchild or multi-ethnic group linking hands.  The question to ask ourselves is, Does what I’m wearing reflect who I am inside?  Now, about those bumper stickers……..

You Otter Try It

The ocean is beautiful! We go once in awhile for a short 45-minute trip there for lunch on the wharf and discussions with the wildlife–birds, sea critters, and people. Recently I was captivated by a young sea otter who relaxed on the pier’s supports while Mom brought him lunch, then snoozed between attempts at exercising his vocal cords. My friend Christine Murphy, who was more than handy with a camera, took the picture below. No matter how tired or stressed I am, it’s amazing how little episodes in nature like this can refresh me, pulling me out of myself and back into this wonderful world I’m such a small part of.

Personal: My Mom

My mother had three kids, kept a spotless house, worked in the family business, dealt with laundry down steep cement steps in a dank, unfinished basement using a ringer washer and depending on a clothesline and sunshine, lived through the death of her youngest as an infant, managed questionable activities of her son, and taught independence to her physically disabled daughter. She has been gone for many, many years, but she lives on in the hearts of the kids who survive her. On Mother’s Day, I reflect on her love for us.

Idea for Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to your mom or someone who has been a mom to you.  Give her a beautiful indoor or outdoor flowering plant she can enjoy for many more years than the bouquet enclosed in a plastic tube.  Both she and the Earth will appreciate it.

Military Moms and Mother’s Day

Mostly, the media covers men in the military, showing their kids running into their arms when their dad suddenly appears home on leave. Imagine being a mother deployed far away from your kids, and imagine her feelings on Mother’s Day.

I invite you to remember these military moms by signing this thank-you card sponsored by the USO.  They won’t be able to be with their kids this coming Sunday, but at least they’ll know that we care about and appreciate them.

Thank you, Mom

In this short video, the thank you goes out to moms who love their kids who will be viewed by many people as “different” — moms who assures their kids that “things will get easier.”  May it be so.

The Mom Project

Women DO get paid the same as men–when they first graduate from college.  The wage gap starts to open up as a woman ages toward motherhood.  Moms make 29% less than dads do in the U.S.

Is a woman less smart, capable, or able once she becomes a mother?  This short video from MomUpAmerica.com answers that question with a bit of stinging humor.

A Child Tells it Like it Is–or Should Be

This little girl speaks from her heart as she gives advice to  her mom.  Nobody put the words in her mouth.  She’s so young…and so wise.
