Are You a Criminal when you Protest?

Ever notice how many protesters have their faces covered?  This is true all over the world, including here in the U.S.  Yet we have freedom of speech.  If I’m expressing beliefs and opinions I truly believe in, why don’t I want people to see my face?  If I’m hiding my identity because I’m doing something illegal, like smashing the store windows of people not involved in what I’m protesting against, and if I think that’s the right and moral thing to do, I should stand up to be counted–and let everyone see your face.

I understand the cover-up in countries where the regime will arrest and execute me just for speaking out, but not here in America. Come on, protesters, let’s see your proud, righteous faces as you sling that brick.

Our Seniors are Hungry

The AARP reported some startling statistics about our senior citizens (age 50+). Many are going hungry in the U.S. Here are their figures:

10+ million are at risk of hunger each day.

3 million use food banks each year.

$130.5 billion is the yearly health care cost estimate resulting from food insecurity.

Why aren’t we taking better care of our older citizens?

Cow-Cuddling??!!

Yup. It has come to the U.S. Europe has been doing it for years. Why? Because it relieves stress. Want to try it? Check out the details at this Bed-and-Breakfast (and cows): This bed and breakfast’s ‘cow cuddling’ option may be exactly what we all need in life

Guns DO Kill People–in the Wrong Hands

I’m not advocating taking people’s guns or rights away, but I am advocating for sensible laws and regulations (since it isn’t happening without them) that would prevent the epidemic of gun violence in our country from spreading even more.

We hear only of the larger events, not so much the smaller ones covered only by local media. On Aug. 4, 2019, 216 calendar days have passed. Compare that with these figures for those days so far related to gun violence:

33,044 incidents — 8,735 deaths — 17,344 injuries — 393 children (0-11) injured or killed — 1,798 teens (12-17) injured or killed — 253 mass shootings (yes, more than one a day). More in one half of the country than the other (see map).

If that doesn’t make gun violence an epidemic, nothing does. We MUST stop just talking about it and begin NOW to eradicate it! Other countries have managed it; why not the U.S?

Guns: Where we stand in the World

The CDC has compiled all its 2017 statistics and revealed a startling fact: almost 40,000 people died last year from guns in the U.S. That’s the highest number in 40 years. (1999 saw 30,000 such deaths.)  It’s also the third year in a row of increase, after years of stable numbers.

Worldwide, our country makes  up 14.2% of gun deaths, surpassed only by Brazil, with 17.2% of the world’s gun-related deaths. Note that we aren’t talking war here–except individually against other individuals and ourselves. A good number of U.S. gun deaths (60%) are suicides, and we see daily news reports about someone shooting people in schools, venues, and places of worship.

You can read more specifics in the Huffington Post article U.S. Gun Violence Claimed More Lives In 2017 Than Ever: CDC.

I don’t care if you’re pro-gun, anti-gun, or something in between. It’s obvious that gun violence is an epidemic in America, one that needs a cure. Studies have shown that it isn’t because we have more people with mental health problems here–countries with similar numbers of those people don’t have the gun violence we have.

So what is the cause? We don’t know but must get serious about finding out. And what is the cure? Again, we don’t know but MUST get serious about finding out.

Two-Minute History of Illegal Immigration

Could you or a close friend be called an “Illegal” in the near future? Yes. This  short video takes us through a history of who has been deemed “illegal” in the U.S. and why.  (Note: The video takes a short while to load, and you’ll probably have to right-click on it, then select “unmute” to get sound.)

Wanna Go Forest Bathing?

Okay.  I admit it.  I’m a tree hugger.  I love being out in a forest.  It relaxes me and helps me understand my place in the universe.  Apparently, I’m not all that  crazy; forest bathing is catching on in the U.S.  Watch  this video and see if it’s right for you.

High Cost of Gunshot Treatment

Startling fact:  It took almost $7 billion–and possibly more–to treat gunshot victims over nine years (read Gunshot Wounds Cost U.S. Hospitals Nearly $7 Billion Over 9 Years).

See also the Stanford study “Gun injuries cost Americans $730 million a year in hospital bills.”  A related startling fact.

Translate the money into number of lives affected and that’s not just startling, it’s a national crisis.

And it begs the question, How  much value do we put on human life?

How the U.S. Can Save $9 Billion a Year

Unthinking adults are costing taxpayers a whole lot of money just by NOT doing something simple.  Meanwhile, they’re hurting themselves, those around them, and their employers (who pass on costs to consumers).  If you’re one of these people, please mend your ways.  Read about it:

Here’s a situation where you may want to behave more like a child. Adult immunization rates are far lower than kids’ immunization rates, and a study just published in the journal Health Affairs estimates that in 2015 common vaccine-preventable diseases in adults cost the U.S. $9 billion, with 80% of these costs (or $7.1 billion) from those who did not get vaccinated.

CA, Immigration, Violent Crime, and People who will Save Us

I don’t like outsiders coming into California and telling me what’s wrong with my state, especially when they haven’t done their homework.  I’m galled by Donald Trump’s telling us how bad the violent crime is in California and attributing it to our immigrants.

According to the CATO Institute’s Immigration and Crime–What the Research Says, “Between years 2000 and 2005, California cities with large inflows of recent immigrants tended have lower violent crimes rates [emphasis mine] and the findings are statistically significant.  During the same time period, there is no statistically significant relationship between immigration and property crime.”

The American Immigration Council  says this in The Criminalization of Immigration in the United States: “For more than a century, innumerable studies have confirmed two simple yet powerful truths about the relationship between immigration and crime: immigrants are less likely to commit serious crimes or be behind bars than the native-born, and high rates of immigration are associated with lower rates of violent crime and property crime [emphasis mine]. This holds true for both legal immigrants and the unauthorized, regardless of their country of origin or level of education.”

CNN reported in Immigrants and Crime–Crunching the Numbers that “numerous studies going back more than a century have shown that immigrants—regardless of nationality or legal status—are less likely than the native population to commit violent crimes or to be incarcerated. A new report from the Immigration Policy Center notes that while the illegal immigrant population in the U.S. more than tripled between 1990 and 2013 to more than 11.2 million, ‘FBI data indicate that the violent crime rate declined 48%—which included falling rates of aggravated assault, robbery, rape, and murder. Likewise, the property crime rate fell 41%, including declining rates of motor vehicle theft, larceny/robbery, and burglary.’”

A GAO (U.S. Government Accountability Office) report shows an increase in immigrants arrested, but for immigration violations, traffic violations, and drugs, not for violent crimes.  “Based on our random sample, GAO estimates that the criminal aliens had an average of 7 arrests, 65 percent were arrested at least once for an immigration offense, and about 50 percent were arrested at least once for a drug offense. Immigration, drugs, and traffic violations accounted for about 50 percent of arrest offenses. About 90 percent of the criminal aliens sentenced in federal court in fiscal year 2009 (the most recently available data) were convicted of immigration and drug-related offenses.”

I did my own bit of homework, all by myself.  Trump and others like him have teams of people to do it for them.  But they don’t care about the truth; they care only about sound-bites and riling us up against each other so they can jump in and say, “Trust me. I’ll save you.”

Go away and leave California alone.  We don’t need your type of “saving”!
