An Idea: Do You See the Light Bulb Over Your Head?

Did you stock up on those old light bulbs and are still using them?  Think about this: Replacing a single (yes, one) light bulb with fluorescent, which lasts almost 10 times longer, can save ¼ ton of coal, not to mention all the sulfur dioxide, other pollutants, and acid rain that coal would have caused the Earth and us to have breathing and other health problems.

Contact Lens Pollution

A new study shows 14 billion contact lenses flushed down the toilet each year. Since they don’t break down, this is adding to the already-major plastic pollution in oceans and waterways. There isn’t any eco-friendly way to dispose of them yet, but they’re better off in the landfill. Trash them, don’t flush them.

Every Sheet Counts

Can recycling that sheet of paper matter?  The U.S. produced about 20,700,000 tons of paper last year, which took (depending on size) 55 – 110 million trees to produce. But we recycled only about 53% (11,000,000 tons).  Every recycled sheet counts.

Are You Label-Literate?

Know your “green” language on packaging.  “Natural” really means nothing.  “Made with organic ingredients”means that 70% of the ingredients are organic, and with “Organic,”95% are. Only “100% organic” means what it says.

Say NO! to Mosquitoes

Deter mosquitoes: Coat your skin with essential oils of lavender, catnip, neem oil or neem seed oil, essence of black pepper oil (30 drops of any combination into 30 ml unscented moisturizer or organic soy oil—it keeps.)  You can also eat lots of garlic, but you won’t smell as nice.

Cleaning Pools, Spas, and Ponds

Where to drain your swimming pool, spa, or pond for cleaning or repairs?  Not in the creek behind your house or into the street gutter, where it flows into the bay (both are illegal, harmful to the water supply, cause bank erosion). You can run it down the drain, to go through the sewage treatment process, but that wastes it.  OR, instead, let the chlorine evaporate, then use the water to deep soak your lawns and plants.
