Pass it On

Pass on your magazine or newspaper to someone else as you leave a coffee shop or anywhere people wait for services—bus stop, barber, office, etc.  It helps them take up wait-time, keeps you from lugging the already-read material around with you, keeps the item from going into the trash awhile longer, and may save a tree!

Germ-Crusted Dishes?

Air-dried dishes (rack or open dishwasher) are in no greater danger of gathering germs than  heat-drying them in the machine.  Yet heat drying can use at least an extra 25 kilowatt hours a year.  (If you’re really concerned about germs, avoid that dish towel that’s been reused and sitting around.)

Spring Cleaning?

Thinking of Spring cleaning?  For counter tops and mildew, stay away from chemicals.  Instead, mix an equal amount of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and get to work.Leaf 6

Groceries: To Have Delivered or Not?

University of Washington engineers looked at grocery delivery in Seattle and discovered that 20%-75% less carbon dioxide was produced by the delivery trucks than by personal cars going grocery shopping.  Buy groceries online at a store that delivers.

Here’s a Tip: Leave

What’s with leaving racial slurs on restaurant tabs instead of writing in a tip?  It happened last year in two different restaurants in California.  Recently it happened to a 17-year-old waitress in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  In this case, the young waitress, Sadie Elledge, is American-born with a Mexican/Honduran heritage and no hint of an accent.  The message read, “We only tip citizens.”  Plus, the customer-couple would not make eye contact with Sadie.  Her co-workers were outraged; her boss told the customers not to come back.

But it’s not just racial slurs.  Some receipts have hateful notes commenting on the server’s hair color, sexual orientation, weight, religion, and even genitalia.

Come on, jerks. If you don’t like the looks of your server, ask to be moved to another section. If you aren’t comfortable in a place, leave before ordering.  If your service is bad, consider that it might be the fault of a slow cook or a server having to cover too many tables, which means they’re doing the best they can and deserve a tip. Most of all, think about how you would want your daughter or son treated if they were that server.

THAT’S Reyclable?!

Some things around the house you think are not recyclable (R) or compostable (C) really are, e.g., human and animal hair (R, C), dryer lint (C), cotton balls and Q-tips with cardboard handles (C).  Before tossing something that just might be recyclable into the garbage, check it out on  www.earth911.com.

Chill–with Glass

Here’s a tasty way for you and the earth to chill out: Store refrigerated food in glass, which keeps the food colder longer. Use glass jars you would have discarded rather than oil-based plastic containers you’d buy.  A bonus is that when those labels fall off you know what’s in the jar because you can see inside it.

Here’s Eggs-actly What to Do

What to do with egg cartons after coloring Easter eggs: use the bottom half in a drawer to store small items (thumb tacks, paper clips, earrings), or punch drainage holes, add soil, seed, and water, place in a sunny spot, and watch your seedlings grow.  Later on, after the cartons get grungy or torn, toss them into your compost pile.
