Natural Wonders

So many of us don’t give a thought to avoiding the use of and/or recycling of paper. Which was once part of a tree. Here’s why I care:

According to the Univ. of Indiana, each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!

This Bus Actually Cleans the Air

What a great idea. Instead of spewing diesel or simply using less-polluting electricity, this British bus actually cleans the air as it goes along its route. In fact, it’s efficient enough to clean pollutants from the air along that route to the equivalent of 16 times a year.

It’s only experimental, but…what a concept!

Contact Lens Pollution

A new study shows 14 billion contact lenses flushed down the toilet each year. Since they don’t break down, this is adding to the already-major plastic pollution in oceans and waterways. There isn’t any eco-friendly way to dispose of them yet, but they’re better off in the landfill. Trash them, don’t flush them.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Walk

What would happen if all Americans aged 10-74 walked or biked half an hour a day instead of driving?  We would save 6.5 billion gallons of gas (think of all the pollution NOT hitting our air) and lose 3 billion pounds off our bodies.

Earth Friendly Tip: High Cost of Idling

Avoid drive-throughs, warming up your car, talking in your driveway with your car running, and other needless idling, which releases double the emissions of a moving car and adds to air and noise pollution.  It costs you a bundle in wasted gas, too: Americans squander at least $2 billion worth of fuel yearly on this activity.
