A Question for Valentine’s Day

On this Valentine’s Day–a day celebrating love and caring–it occurred to me that, if natural enemies can overcome their fear, distrust, and unloving attitudes toward each other, why can’t humans?

Cut Your Heating Bill

45% of the total energy used in U.S. homes goes toward heating.  So it pays to let the sun in, seal drafts, use insulated window coverings, and replace your old furnace, which is probably only 65% efficient (or less) and might burn 400 more therms of natural gas than a new model that’s 95% efficient. It’s good for you AND for the Earth.

Are You Label-Literate?

Know your “green” language on packaging.  “Natural” really means nothing.  “Made with organic ingredients”means that 70% of the ingredients are organic, and with “Organic,”95% are. Only “100% organic” means what it says.

A Natural Blueblood!

I am constantly awed by nature–its power and beauty make me feel part of something wonderful and real.  If you live in the Western hemisphere, we’re experiencing something that hasn’t happened in 152 years.  The Super Blue Blood Moon is a combination of lunar eclipse, blood moon, and super moon all rolled into one.  Last night it lit up the sky as though it were dawn, and it’s still visible.  Go out and take a look.

New Sweetener Stevia Not Such a Sweet Deal

We’re seeing more and more products containing a “new,” natural sweetener, Stevia.  Companies–especially Coca Cola–are reaping billions of dollars because of it.  But they didn’t invent it.  It occurs in nature; in Paraguay and Brazil, the Guarani people discovered it and have been using it for generations.  Coca Cola uses the plants but doesn’t pay those indigenous people for their knowledge–in violation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

These groups of people live in poverty, a life-situation that stevia could alleviate if Coca Cola at least shared the profits that legally and morally belong to the people.  According to international law, the traditional knowledge and use of stevia belongs to them.  That makes what Coca Cola is doing simple theft.

Watch this short video to get a picture of the situation. Then read Public Eye’s “Stivia” for more details.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Hand Sanitizers

Hand sanitizers are creating antibiotic-resistant “super bugs” and polluting our water with chemicals.  Instead, disinfect hands with natural antibacterial ingredients, like organic alcohol and essential oils (such as thyme oil and lemon oil), and moisturize them with products containing jojoba, coconut, or olive oil.
