If God Doesn’t Care, Why Should I?

GOD DOESN’T CARE SO WHY SHOULD I?  This is an easy attitude to take in our world of suicide bombers, AIDS, crushing poverty, hunger, homelessness, violent gangs, abuse of all kinds, drugs, discrimination, and cruelty.  The answer lies in today’s Thursday Thought, which is an ancient teaching:

Past the seeker as he prayed, came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten.  And seeing them, the holy one went down into deep prayer and cried, “Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?”  And out of the long silence, God said, “I did do something.  I MADE YOU.”

The Enemy

Today’s Thursday Thought quote calls into question who “the enemy” really is…or  isn’t.

“We are called to speak for the weak, for the voiceless, for the victims of our nation, for those it calls ‘enemy,’ for no document from human hands can make these humans any less our brothers.  I think of them, too, because it is clear to me that there will be no meaningful solution until some attempt is made to know them and hear their broken cries.”  Martin Luther King, Jr.   (From his speech “When Silence Is Betrayal,” given at Riverside Church, New York, April 4, 1967.)

Culture and Contempt, Chavez Style

This Saturday is Caesar Chavez Day in California, Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico, and Nebraska.  It celebrates the legacy of an American farm-worker who led his fellow  workers toward claiming their civil  rights.  Along with Dolores Huerta, he started the United Farm Workers.  This day was established as one in which we focus on doing service for the community.  In today’s Thursday Thought quote, he  reminds us of an important fact that should be everyone’s mindset.

“Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.” — Cesar Chavez

Privacy and the Smoking Gun

I was so anxious to give you the information about Facebook yesterday, that I  forgot to post a “Thursday Thought” quote.  So I’ll do it today.  I think this one is appropriate:

“Privacy is dead, and social media hold the smoking gun.” — Pete Cashmore, Mashable CEO

Run-of-the-Mill Humans

Stephen Hawking was a great scientist. He had the world and future figured out and lived long enough to see some of it  confirmed. Sometimes he commented on humanity, as well.  Such as in today’s Thursday Thought quote.

“We are all different. There is no such thing as a standard or run-of-the-mill human being, but we share the same human spirit.” –Stephen Hawking

Eleanor Roosevelt in Hot Water

Eleanor Roosevelt gives us today’s Thursday Thought quote.  Considering all she went through, I believe she knew what she was talking about.

Wisdom of Lincoln

In honor of Presidents’ week, let’s let our 16th President give us our Thoughtful Thursday quote:

“I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” — Abraham Lincoln

People and Threads

We often don’t know what’s going on with people we encounter in the course of our day.  So today’s Thursday Thought quote is good to keep in mind.

Goodall Identifies Danger

Jane Goodall gives us today’s Thursday Thought.  She has seen so much concern and apathy that I think she knows what she’s talking about.

Smile!

Yesterday, while walking my dog, I saw a sad, lonely-looking woman sitting on her front porch.  When she raised her head, I smiled. Her face lit up, and she silently smiled at me.  It reminded me of today’s Thursday Thought quote:

“What  sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.” – Joseph Addison
