Inflicting Pain on Family Pets and Other Animals on Purpose

They’re just dumb animals…maybe.  But should they suffer needlessly?  Some researchers have abandoned what they deem cruel product-testing on animals, saying its results are questionable (human and animal allergic reactions differ) and can be obtained in other ways (e.g., artificial skin in a test tube). The USDA tries to ensure proper food and shelter for these animals but can do nothing about the infliction of pain or relieving it.  Laws are being passed to stop the sale of family pets (ever wonder where they go when they’re stolen?) for clinical trials and to prohibit animal testing when other methods are available.  Meanwhile, companies use animals, for example, to see what eye and skin damage a product can cause. Go to www.navs.org,  to learn more.

Look for a “Cruelty Free” label on packaging. If you don’t see it, show your disapproval by boycotting products from that company  and let them you’re doing so and why. Tell offending companies that we won’t tolerate needless violence against animals.

Dogs & Covid-19

Studies are going on right now to see if dogs can sniff out the coronavirus in people. For a long time, dogs have sniffed out other diseases (e.g., diabetes and malaria), so scientists are confident that they’ll be able to do the same with covid-19. Imagine dogs screening people at airports and gatherings. They’re quicker than waiting for the results of a test. Of course, if you’re singled out by the dog you’ll still have to take the test to be sure. If not, though, you forego the anxiety of wondering if you should be tested. Watch this short video:

Three Gates

Today’s Thursday Thought concerns words and how we use them. Anything that doesn’t make it through these three gates should never be spoken.

Time to Teach? Wow!

President Obama wants to revamp “No Child Left Behind” in part by limiting time spent on standardized testing.  As a teacher who spent untold hours administering those tests, I cry “Hallelujah!”

As new fads and regulations fall upon classrooms, teachers have more and more special-interest slants to add to their curriculum.  Not that most of them aren’t important.  In fact, they often pull in segments of our population that have been ignored or underrepresented in what kids are learning.  But they take time to teach.  The standardized tests steal time from the actual teaching/learning process.

The value of the tests lies in cold, hard numbers that bureaucrats can see on paper, report to the world, and use for decision-making.

However, I question that value.  I remember my students asking, “Will this count on our grade?”  Because the answer was “No,” a portion of the kids didn’t bother trying.  Another portion included those who simply were not good at taking objective tests or who, as immigrants, handled spoken English fine but written English, not so much.  Or they had trouble understanding because their growing-up experiences didn’t match those described on the test. In other words, a significant number of kids had learned a lot more than their standardized test results showed.  Is that valuable data?

Go for it, Prez.  Let’s allow time for teachers to teach and kids to learn.

Why Rocket Tests Have Glitches

Poor Orion.  Like many of its predecessors, before it was successfully launched  it had several glitches–from wind to malfunctioning valves.

I figured out WHY this keeps happening.  It’s the Martians.  See, they’re pretty smart beings (ask Ray Bradbury).  That’s why, many moons ago, they secretly transported a colony to Earth.  Their sole purpose over the years has been to set up invisible wind machines, sneak into a rocket and discombobulate valves, loosen panels, and perform similar bouts of interference.

Why?  Put yourself in their position.  They know we’re headed to Mars.  They’ve seen how we overpopulate and have little consideration for nature.  Their version of Fox News reports our riots and wars.  In their opinion, would You want US to visit your home planet?

Chimps Escape into Retirement

Chimps are getting retired, not rewired (or slathered with toxic creams or injected with poisons).  That’s good news from the National Institute of Health.  For years, researchers have known that 1) results of tests done on animals frequently don’t give a clue about how humans will react to the same test-substance, and 2) there are fake skins that mimic human skin and respond to substances like cosmetics as reliably as or more reliably than the skin of lab-animals.

Finally, some animals are being retired from the lab.  The Institute plans to send 90% of their chimps to a sanctuary. Now, if others will only follow their example….
