Put Your Fish to Work

Don’t waste that water your fish have enriched with nutrients.  When cleaning the fish tank, use the water on your plants and trees. You think it’s scummy; they think it’s yummy.

A Thought for Plant-Lovers

I talk to plants. Some people think I’m daffy, but I see the results. Even the ones I “adopt” from the neighbor’s trash pile revive and grow. I’m convinced that talking to them helps. That’s why today’s Thursday Thought quote has a ring of truth in in for me.

About that Garbage Disposal…

Use the garbage disposal less. Between faucets washing scraps down the drain while they’re being ground up and the water used to process sewage in treatment plants, some 500,000 gallons of water are wasted daily.  Choose and cook foods which produce little waste, be creative with leftovers, and turn what remains into compost to nourish your plants without a trip to the nursery for plant food.

Something to Buzz About

Bees are dying of starvation because of “Improved” crops (e.g., soybeans, corn) that don’t produce any nectar.  Plant flowers that will provide bees with nectar and pollen. We really need them to pollinate plants that support our own food chain. Pass this on to keep the message buzzing.

Use that Humidity!

Get comfy and water-wise at the same time.  Turn on your humidifier and relax.  Then, as the water accumulates in your dehumidifier, don’t dump it down the drain.  Water your plants with it instead.

Eco-Friendly Tip: More savings on Water

More ways to conserve water: Water only three days a week (all that most gardens need), saving 35-50 gallons per day. Collect rainwater and gray water (from tub, sink, or wash) for use in gardening.  Landscape your home with rocks, wood chips, or native plants, which use little water.
