Germ-Crusted Dishes?

Air-dried dishes (rack or open dishwasher) are in no greater danger of gathering germs than  heat-drying them in the machine.  Yet heat drying can use at least an extra 25 kilowatt hours a year.  (If you’re really concerned about germs, avoid that dish towel that’s been reused and sitting around.)

Get Rid of Ants Naturally

Use natural substances to fight ants in your house.  Place one of these where they’re getting in (or just place along baseboards): bay leaves, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, salted cucumber peels, mint leaves, or tea from mint tea bags.

A Day to Enjoy

Sit back.  Relax.  And  enjoy…a good book.  It’s National Read a Book Day.  Read something funny, or mind-blowing, or mind-stretching, or even trashy.  Read some biography or poetry.  Just read.

You may not have time to browse the library down the street from you, so here’s an idea: e-books.  Sites like Amazon, Apple, Barnes and  Noble, Smashwords, and Kobo have a ton of e-books to choose from.  Or you can read one of my six FREE e-books.  Get descriptions and locations for a FREE download by going to http://www.jackieodonnell.net/book-previews. The easiest place to download them is Smashwords.com.

Enjoy!

Guilt-free chocolate?

Guilt-free chocolate?  The pounds may stay, but not regrets about how that yummy stuff got to us.  The same with coffee, tea, rice, sugar, juice, honey, wine, flowers, crafts–all sorts of things that often reach our homes through the mistreatment of  people in other countries.  Many, often young children, work under harsh conditions to  support their families.  But it’s the only work available.  The FAIR-TRADE MOVEMENT aims to change this, to provide employment, fair wages, decent conditions, and money that goes back into their communities for health and education.  This is not “free trade,” which is political, among nations, but “fair trade,” valuing the well-being of people.  Participate by buying products on-line (Google “Fair Trade”) or at Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Cost Plus, Peet’s, Starbucks, and elsewhere.  Watch for the “Fair Trade” symbol on packages.  Ask the manager.  Make your interest known.  Then, maybe just one more nibble wouldn’t hurt….

Lighten Up with a Cookie

Forget what has been yet another depressing week, if you’ve heard any of the news (almost impossible to avoid). Instead, let’s lighten up and celebrate on this special day.  It’s National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!  (Full disclosure: I’m addicted to them.)

Pull out a package of those delightful indulgences and read “5 Facts You Need to Know” about them. Learn about their  mysterious history, their accidental invention, who makes $3 million from them each year at a fair, who was the first one to package them up for our consumption, and–very important–how to get free ones today.

Now, pop a cookie into your watering mouth, go to that website, and get some education with your calories.

Produce Mesh

Those plastic mesh bags that produce comes in can be used for another purpose before they hit the trash can.  Take off any staples or labels, tie them into a tight knot (or series of         knots), and use them instead of pot scrubbers or steel wool pads.

Splish-Splash Gate

Is anyone else bothered by all the Trump brand water bottles at every seat during government meetings?  They’re clear as, well, water, in pictures all over the media.  I’m irritated by the fact that taxpayers are forced to buy a Trump product and that this product gets frequent, free, valuable advertising.

On the lighter side: There was Watergate, then Whitewater. Could this be Splish-Splash Gate?  Consider President Trump’s normal demeanor in light of the lyrics to the old Bobby Darin song “Splish Spash.”

Another Reason to Stay Away from Cigarettes

Consider the impact of cigarettes.  First, because tobacco leaves are cured using wood, it takes a whole tree to produce 300 cigarettes. Second, all the smoke and gasses coming from them add to global warming.  And, third, filters are NOT biodegradable.

Add Boxes

Beautify your patio or deck with planter boxes.  Grow your own organic veggies, or flowers to cut and bring in to perk up the house.  This is an easy, fun way to reduce your carbon footprint.

Double your Carry-Out

More and more cities are banning Earth-harming Styrofoam from restaurants.  Get in the habit of bringing small reusable containers with you to meals out. Carry them (empty or full) in a decorative, washable draw-string cloth bag.
