Tight Denim and Rape

Denim Day?!  How stupid is that!  Not at all when we look at how it started and what wearing denim today means.

18 years ago the Italian Supreme Court reversed a rapist’s conviction because his victim was wearing tight denim pants.  Therefore, (they guessed) she must have helped him remove them.  Therefore, ruled the court, because she had given implied consent, the sex was  consensual.  The women in Parliament wore denim the next day in support of the victim and protest at the decision.  Thus, Denim Day was born.

What does it mean?  Standing up for rape victims.  Saying that what a woman wears does NOT mean she’s asking to be raped.  That there needs to be changes in attitudes toward sexual assault.  As the Denim Day Campaign says, “There is no excuse and never an invitation to rape.”

Healthy Seniors

Two days from now (May 25) is National Senior Health and Fitness Day.  It’s a day when we older people think seriously about how we’re treating our bodies. The theme for this 23rd annual event is “Improve Yourself for a Better Self.”  All sorts of organizations are planning events we can participate in, including free health screenings and workouts :

  • Area Agencies on Aging
  • Banks
  • Health Clubs
  • Houses of Worship
  • Hospitals
  • Malls/Shopping Centers
  • Park & Recreation Departments
  • Retirement Communities
  • Senior Centers
  • State/Local/Aging Departments
  • And Many More!

You have a couple of days to call one of these or look in your local newspaper to find an event near you.  Be healthy!

OK, Star Wars Fans

I give in.  Too much on the news this morning about it, so I’ll give in and wish you a happy Star Wars Day–May the 4th be with you.

(I admit, it does appeal to my warped love of puns.)

Envisioning a Random World

Whether it’s the day (Feb. 17) or the entire week (this week), observing National Random Acts of Kindness Week/Day is a pretty good idea.  (In case you’re interested the Day was founded by Josh de Jong of New Zealand.)

Use your imagination.  Watch for opportunities.  You can pay for the coffee of the person in line behind you, give an unexpected compliment, or take a friend’s car (with permission, of course) and get it washed–especially if that friend has difficulty doing it him/herself.  Give a warm smile to someone who seems lonely or down-in-the-dumps.  You can mow your neighbor’s lawn when you mow yours, take in a neighbor’s trash cans with yours after collections, drop off a batch of cookies to a nursing home, thank the crossing guard for keeping your kids safe…all sorts of things.  The act doesn’t have to be big or cost anything; it just needs to be sincere and random.

Gee.  Maybe this could catch on and we’d all continue such acts each day of our lives.  Imagine what the world would be like.

A Glorious Day to Walk or Bike

Maybe you didn’t know that today is “International Walk or Bike to School Day.”  40 countries are encouraging kids and their parents to walk or bike to school.  How often do 40 countries agree on anything?

If you didn’t know or forgot, how about tomorrow (and the next day and the next…)?  Get out of your car, put a little neighborhood group together, and get the kids to school and home under their own foot-power.  You may get to know a neighbor better, maker some play-dates, decide that J.J. Smythe is a kid you definitely want to keep away from your family–all sorts of things.  You and the kids get a little fresh air and exercise.  You save gas and wear-and-tear on your car (those stop/starts/jerks of both kinds involved in the drop-off are hard on your car).

Overall, it’s healthy–for you AND for the earth.

A Dog-Gone Silly “Day”

Take Your Dog to Work Day (today–created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International) is downright silly.  Mine is at work with me every day.  Of course, I work from a home-office….

Anyway, here’s my helper, Riley Casey O’Donnell. The after-surgery cone and lighting make her look either like an angel (HA!) or, if you’re old enough to recall, the RCA Victor dog.

Something to Bark At

This is National Puppy Day.  Not an officially-sanctioned day, just something Colleen Paige dreamed up in 2006 to call attention to dogs and the joy and love they bring to people.  AND to make more people aware of the horrors of puppy mills–the more than 8,000 backyard breeders and puppy mills in the U.S. that supply pet stores. At these places, dogs are often kept in unsanitary, cruel conditions, then killed when they can no longer produce puppies.  The motto for today is “Adopt Instead of Shop!”

I agree with that.  Here’s a picture of my 10-year-old “ooops” puppy (adopted from a family).  Her name is Riley Casey O’Donnell.  She, like all my dogs before her, is a constant lesson on how to give unconditional love, even when the recipient doesn’t seem to deserve it.

Happy St. Pat’s Day, Even if You’re a Snake

My Irish heritage causes me to think, this time of year, about St. Patrick.  I know that he didn’t chase the snakes out of Ireland.  He couldn’t  as there were no snakes to chase out of this land that was underwater fifteen thousand years ago and then had glacial conditions.  Even hearty snakes that might have been able to swim the frigid ocean waters would, literally, freeze their tails.  But it’s a charming legend, based largely on his converting so many people to Christianity from religions that revered snakes.

Oh well.  At least I know that leprechauns exist.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

A Day for Rats and Mice

I admit to a prejudice–against mice and rats.  I’m, to say the least, not fond of them.  But today I’ll give them their due, because it’s AFERMA Fancy Rat and Mouse Day.  I  kid you not.  There’s actually an American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (AFERMA), and they hold a yearly celebration of their favorite critters.  Their website invites us to “Celebrate Fancy Rats and Mice, the Rat and Mouse Fancier, and the Rat and Mouse Fancy!”  Take a look at their logo for the day (yes, those are mice):

If you want to celebrate or read more about them, learn to raise them or care for “orphans,” read books about them, attend shows, etc., their website is http://www.afrma.org/affiliate.htm.  As for me, I’ll just spend the day being a wee bit guilty about those traps set in my kitchen and garage.

Invisible Workers

IT’S MAGIC!  Mail appears and trash disappears.  Somehow the electric company knows how much power I use each month.  After club or church gatherings, the grounds become clean overnight.  Fresh vegetables are abundant at the market.  A burger just shows up at the drive-through window or a choice of goodies in the cafeteria cases.  Funny, I didn’t see anyone do a thing.  It was all done by the “invisible people”—workers we take for granted because they always do their jobs.

This year, expand Labor Day into a life-long habit.  Make it a point to watch for the person who delivers mail, reads meters, picks up trash, prepares food in the cafeteria, hands over that burger.  Be aware of grounds-keeping individuals and housekeepers at the hotels you stay at.  Notice the human being who tends the store’s vegetables.   In other words, recognize the workers.  Make a special effort to thank them.  Let them know that you appreciate the part they play in making your life easier.  Feel free to shock them with a compliment.  They deserve it.
