A Thank-Full Day

Often a “thank you” isn’t needed.  Why thank a person for doing what he is supposed to do?  Here’s a thought: a “thank you” may encourage someone to do the right thing the next time he’s in that situation, or it might be the only bright spot in his otherwise-depressing day.  I thank the driver who stops for me in the crosswalk, the bicyclist who sees me coming in my handicap scooter and moves from the sidewalk to the street, the woman who notices me pulling into a disabled parking spot and moves the shopping cart she’d blocked me with in the cross-hatch section, the teen who turns down his loud music when he notices that we at the next picnic table are being bothered by it, the delivery man for being gentle with my package, the child who puts his trash into the can without being told.  Why?  Because we are responsible for each other, including nourishing each other’s spirits, fostering actions that inspire others to care about members of the human family. Such is the power of a simple “thank you.”

Something to think about — and practice — on this International Thank-You Day.

Remember: 75 Years Ago

Some claim it never happened.  Others hear stories about it from relatives and friends.  Still others lived through it.  It affects all of us, because it was one of the most heinous crimes that humans have perpetrated against fellow humans.  The Holocaust.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.  It’s been 75 years. Yet, we remember it so that we can prevent it from happening again, even as we see shades of it developing in our world today.

Take a few minutes to view this video, “Rescue,”  of people who refused to accept the inhumanity and fought it–and are still fighting it–by taking action.

To Women Everywhere

Happy International Women’s Day to all my female friends. Let’s be extra kind to all of our sisters today.

Pirating a Birth Day

Since today is my birthday, I was curious if maybe today wasn’t also a “National” or “Annual” day of celebration that I might participate in. I didn’t expect it to be International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Because I write a blog and edit people’s precious manuscripts, resumes, and Doctoral dissertations, I didn’t think it was such a good idea for me.  But it might be fun to try some year.
Here’s a   description of the day: “International Talk Like A Pirate Day is a parody holiday annually held on September 19. Celebrated for the first time in 1995, the fun holiday encourages people to talk and dress like the sea plunderers of yesteryears.” You can learn more about the day (and maybe be inspired to join in the fun) by going to Fun Holiday — International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Ahoy, Matey!

Calling all Women!

Tomorrow is YOUR DAY.  It’s International Women’s Day. I’m not calling you to action or  protest or even stand up for your rights–unless, of course, you choose to.  I just want to wish you a joyous day in which you simply celebrate the woman you are.

A Glorious Day to Walk or Bike

Maybe you didn’t know that today is “International Walk or Bike to School Day.”  40 countries are encouraging kids and their parents to walk or bike to school.  How often do 40 countries agree on anything?

If you didn’t know or forgot, how about tomorrow (and the next day and the next…)?  Get out of your car, put a little neighborhood group together, and get the kids to school and home under their own foot-power.  You may get to know a neighbor better, maker some play-dates, decide that J.J. Smythe is a kid you definitely want to keep away from your family–all sorts of things.  You and the kids get a little fresh air and exercise.  You save gas and wear-and-tear on your car (those stop/starts/jerks of both kinds involved in the drop-off are hard on your car).

Overall, it’s healthy–for you AND for the earth.

A Dog-Gone Silly “Day”

Take Your Dog to Work Day (today–created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International) is downright silly.  Mine is at work with me every day.  Of course, I work from a home-office….

Anyway, here’s my helper, Riley Casey O’Donnell. The after-surgery cone and lighting make her look either like an angel (HA!) or, if you’re old enough to recall, the RCA Victor dog.

Celebrate Women’s Day

Tomorrow, March 8, is International Women’s Day.  Here’s a short history of the day (from Care2):

In the years surrounding the turn of the 20th century, women were entering the workplace in larger numbers than ever before, thanks largely to the expansion of nineteenth century industrialism. The jobs they filled were segregated by gender and were mainly in the areas of manufacturing, textiles and in domestic services where working conditions were dismal, and wages even worse. The political climate was one of turmoil and change – Socialism and Trade Unionism were coming into being as working people the world over sought to improve their status and working conditions. Additionally, Women’s Suffrage, the right to vote, was a still un-realized goal.

The first Women’s Day was held on the last Sunday in February 1908, initiated by groups of American socialist women for the purpose of demanding the Vote and to call attention to the political and economic status of women. It continued to be held on the final Sunday in February through 1913, when celebrations of the day began to shift to the first Sunday in March. When the Russian Czar abdicated in 1917, the provisional Government granted women the right to vote – this took place on February 23, according to the Julian calendar then used in Russia, but on March 8 according to the Gregorian calendar used by most of the rest of the world.

In the ninety-plus years since its inception, International Women’s Day has formed a rallying point for coordinated efforts by the growing international women’s movement to call for women’s rights and increased participation in the political and economic process. It is also a time to reflect on progress made, and to commemorate the lives of women who have played courageous roles in the history of women’s rights.

Happy Women’s Day!

I Want a Flying Car

I really do want one of those Sky Cars by Moller International (in Davis CA).   I have a driver’s license, which is all I need. When I’m accused of “flying low” in my car, I could respond, “Of course!”  I could drive along the freeway until I hit heavy traffic, then take off and fly above it. ..well, maybe not, since it will go only 30 mph.  I’m not sure how it will land, whether I’d need a little runway before pulling into a parking space. Or how many miles per gallon it will get.  Or how expensive a parachute is (can’t be too careful).  Or how much it will cost.  Or how the heck I’d get into/out of it. Or whether the test-model, due out at the end of the year, will even work.  But it’s cute.  And red, my favorite color.  I don’t care.  I want one!
