We Must Earn Our Right to Complain

You should be in decision-making mode right now, as vote-by-mail ballots arrive and voting day approaches very soon.  Here’s something to consider.

Lots of us are upset with laws that are being passed or how our elected officials are representing us. Many people are angry at new laws on the ballot that that will hurt specific economic, ethnic, or age groups, or that further endanger people who are already at-risk, or that fund projects that are clearly designed to benefit a small group at the expense of and little benefit to the rest of us.

Oddly enough, many who complain don’t exercise a basic American right that empowers the average person. They forget that one tiny individual voice added to all the other tiny voices equals a shout heard in the halls of all the legislatures.

Remember: you don’t have to vote on every issue and office. Vote on the ones you feel you understand and will have a positive impact on your state and country. BE that one vote added to another added to another that, together, DO make a difference.

This election, earn your right to complain: vote.

Companies Giving Women the Cold Shoulder

If you’re a woman grabbing a parka in the office during August, you aren’t crazy…or having cold flashes.  A study from the Netherlands showed that you’re cold for a reason: the AC is set for the comfort of men who wear suits (sometimes 3-piece) all year and whose metabolism runs warmer than women’s.

Women prefer the room temperature at about 77 degrees, while men prefer it at less than 72 degrees.  The U.S. government suggests setting thermostats at between 69 and 73 degrees F.

So, unless you meet the standards (set in the 60s and 70s) of a man who is age 40 and weighs 154 pounds, plan to experience chilliness coming not just from a disapproving boss.  And keep a coat handy.

A Dog-Gone Silly “Day”

Take Your Dog to Work Day (today–created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International) is downright silly.  Mine is at work with me every day.  Of course, I work from a home-office….

Anyway, here’s my helper, Riley Casey O’Donnell. The after-surgery cone and lighting make her look either like an angel (HA!) or, if you’re old enough to recall, the RCA Victor dog.
