An Idea for Labor Day Weekend and Beyond

Labor Day weekend…a few days to relax as summer comes to a close. Here’s something to think about as you relax.

Labor of all types should be respected and honored on Labor Day and always. Even if it’s done so often in front of our eyes that we no longer notice or acknowledge it. Think about it. Do you really see the work your family members do in your home? In your household, who does the cooking, cleaning, laundry, lawn-mowing, car repairs, or bill-paying? Who acts as general contractor, arranging for needed repairs around the home and yard? Who shoulders most of the daily responsibility for child-rearing, including teaching the children morality, consideration for others, faith, honesty, and other attributes that will mold them into caring, productive adults? Who helps them with homework? Do the children do assigned chores–or sometimes just because they choose to help? Take a moment to notice the work being done around you daily and say thank you to the family member doing it. Your little gesture of appreciation honors labor itself as well as your loved one performing it.

Those Outspoken Kids

Kids marching peacefully. Kids respectfully making demands of lawmakers.  Kids standing up for what is right and just and humanitarian and common sense.  They already understand what Bishop Belo means by today’s Thursday Thought quote.

“Under your shoulders. Dear young people of the entire world, weigh the responsibility to transform tomorrow’s world into a society where peace, harmony and fraternity reign.”  —  Bishop Carlos Belo, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner

I’m Sorry

I’m sorry, but I’m not offering you an informative or humorous blog today.  My heart is too heavy as I hear news of even more human beings being killed by terrorists who have no concept of brotherhood or basic human decency.  ISIS has claimed responsibility for Brussels, which means the perpetrators are once again profaning the name of Allah, whom they claim as their God yet who must be crying tears of sadness and disappointment right now.

In a few minutes, I intend to ask my God–the universal God of mercy and love–to help the rest of us fight this evil of terrorism.

It’s the Parents’ Responsibility

The controversy isn’t new–it was brewing when I was teaching many, many years ago.  The difference now is that there are several studies proving the obvious: kids are too tired to learn during their early morning classes.

The proposed solution is to start school later.  The main argument I’ve heard against that is that it will mess up after-school activities, like sports and clubs.  I’m not for it for another, more practical reason.  That is, if school begins later, kids will con their parents into letting them stay up later, which defeats the purpose.  I can hear it now–“Mom, Dad, school doesn’t start until 10:00 so I can stay up later because I can sleep late.”

If parents would stop giving in to kid-logic and make them go to bed at an earlier hour, the problem is solved.  I’m a mom; I remember bedtime battles.  But there are certain things we need to put our foot down about.  A youngster’s being in an alert state so he/she can learn is one of those things.  It’s up to parents to take responsibility.
