Cool AC Savings

Keep your AC unit cool.  Loosely cover the condenser or window-mounted unit (don’t restrict air-flow, which will increase electricity use); put an awning over it; or plant a tree that will shade the unit.  Any of these measures can save energy and up to 10% on your AC costs.

Saving Can Be Cool in the Summer

Here are a few hints to keep your house–and so yourself–cool this summer: 1) Open up the window coverings when sunlight isn’t streaming through, then close when the sun hits the windows. 2) Use light-colored, loose-weave mesh shades to let in light and keep out heat. 3) Apply reflective (also called low-emissivity, or “low-e”) coatings to the outside of windows. Then, sit back, relax, and enjoy the comfort, knowing that, by not using your AC, you’re saving energy and money.

Tread Lightly–or Not at All

Get in shape to wear all those nice, revealing party dresses throughout November and January.  But be considerate of everyone else on earth while you do it.  One way is to stay off of the gym’s treadmills.  You’d be surprised at how much fossil-fuel energy is used by the large building’s AC kept high for exercisers, plus power to the treadmill and TV in front of it—it’s like leaving on 50 CFLs or three or four 46″ LCD TVs during your workout! Instead, use machines powered by humans–or run outdoors and soak up nature.

Companies Giving Women the Cold Shoulder

If you’re a woman grabbing a parka in the office during August, you aren’t crazy…or having cold flashes.  A study from the Netherlands showed that you’re cold for a reason: the AC is set for the comfort of men who wear suits (sometimes 3-piece) all year and whose metabolism runs warmer than women’s.

Women prefer the room temperature at about 77 degrees, while men prefer it at less than 72 degrees.  The U.S. government suggests setting thermostats at between 69 and 73 degrees F.

So, unless you meet the standards (set in the 60s and 70s) of a man who is age 40 and weighs 154 pounds, plan to experience chilliness coming not just from a disapproving boss.  And keep a coat handy.

Love your AC

The hot weather is upon us.  Now’s the time to show your AC (plus the earth and your budget) a little love.  Clean or change the filter, saving as much as 350 pounds of carbon dioxide and $150 per year. Leaf 6

Why Pay for AC?

Turn UP your AC’s thermostat while you keep cool during this next week or so of high temperatures. Our AC has become an appliance we automatically use before we think of anything else we can do to beat the heat. There are so many other things that we can do that are effective and a LOT less costly.

Read about these at http://www.nrdc.org/thisgreenlife/?utm_source=thisgreenlife&utm_medium=tgllink&utm_campaign=email. Then remember them whenever you find your finger reaching to turn on your AC.

Pretty Cool!

I’m a cool green now, thanks to my son, Mark.  He helped arrange a new heating/AC device for our house–a Panasonic model with split units so we can heat/cool our living-family-kitchen area or just our master bedroom. My power bills are proving that it’s efficient, and I’m really enjoying the comfort. (Note: until this was installed, I was anti-AC for my home.) It was fun, too, because a film crew from the TV show “Designing Spaces” came to my house to interview Mark and demonstrate the unit.

I don’t mean this to be a commercial, just a reminder of how easy it is to help yourself AND the environment at the same time. See what I mean by viewing the short video from the TV show at http://www.designingspaces.tv/show_segment.php?id=1162.  At the same time, you can “meet” my New Jersey son, Mark O’Donnell.
