The Words and Wisdom of Donald Trump

Love him or hate him, you have to admit that he has a lot to say.  However, I think all his English teachers are turning over in their graves after reading the sentence below.  Yes, it–technically–is only a single sentence.

IF HE BECOMES PRESIDENT HE’LL SAVE THE WORLD BY TALKING THE BAD GUYS TO DEATH!

How to Crush a Human

Today’s Thursday Thought quote deals with what happens when humanity is taken away from a person.

“When you crush the humanity out of humans, you’re left with humans with no humanity.” – Rick Yancey, The Infinite Sea

Grandkids Then and Now, Pt. 2

When I saw this, written by Annie Korzen and published in the AARP Bulletin (May 2016), I alternated between chuckles and nodding in agreement.  Because I like to keep my posts short, I’m dividing this up into a few, spread-out posts.  If you’d like to see Part 1, go to https://smthingscount.com/2016/05/11/grandkids-then-and-now-pt-1/.

I’m a new grandmother [says Annie Korzen], but am I cot out for it?  Look at how differently I raised my son from how he’s raising his.

TV  —  Then:  All hail the world’s cheapest babysitter!    Now:  No screen time before age 2; you wanna rot his brain?!

Birthdays  —  Then: Eating candy apples.    Now:  Gift bags from Apple.

Babysitters  —  Then:  You hired the teen next door, then prayed the house wouldn’t reek of pot when you got home.    Now:  Vetted by Homeland Security, then tracked by nanny cam.

Boomerang kids  — Then: “We changed the locks!”    Now:  Your college grad moves home while “looking for a job”–which suspiciously mimics playing video games.

[Watch for more, in Part 3.  And, grandparents, just enjoy the kids!]

Don’t Stop at Red Lights?

Here’s an odd “Week” (I haven’t told you about one in a long while): Stop on Red Week, Aug. 8-13, 2016.  It’s a week declared by The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR).  All of us, whether in a car, on a bike, or on foot, are reminded to stop at red lights.  Common sense, right?

Of course.  So why don’t we do it?  Look at the statistics for 2014. Some 709 people were killed and another 126,000 injured because somebody ran a red light.  I understand that we all lead busy lives, but too busy to spend a few minutes of our day stopped at a light so someone can cross the street, or too interested in biking to our  destination that we sail through (or cut into the crosswalk and pretend to be a pedestrian), or so daring that we dash across the street, thinking we can slip between traffic?

Anyway, at first I thought the idea of this Week was funny, as though we should do it for a week then go back to ignoring red lights the rest of the time.  Now, though, I see it as a great idea, but one that should be stretched out to 52 weeks every year.

Here’s an idea–when you see red, stop.  Be safe out there, please, Readers.

I Can Compost THAT?!

Some things around the house you think are not recyclable (R) or compostable (C) really are, e.g., human and animal hair (R, C), dryer lint (C), cotton balls and Q-tips with cardboard handles (C).  Before tossing something into the garbage, check it out on      www.earth911.com.

Zika Virus and Abortion

No, they aren’t that closely related. Yes, some women may abort if they discover their child  would be born with the conditions that that Zika-infection causes.  Actually, abortion is getting in the way of funding research to fight Zika.

Both Houses of Congress, after compromise (yes, Dems and Reps can compromise when they really try), a funding bill was agreed on–until one side of the aisle added some changes.  The main change, the main sticking point keeping that bill from passing and research flowing is one that blocks money from going to a Planned Parenthood affiliated clinic in Puerto Rico, supposedly to stop the spread of Zika. (I can only guess that the logic is that women are so happy to have abortions available to them that they have more unprotected sex, knowing that they can always get rid of their little “mistakes” growing inside them. !!!!!!)

I don’t understand a legislative system that can tack on semi-related–or totally unrelated–amendments and details. Roberts, of Robert’s Rules of Order, would be horrified.

And I can’t understand how our legislators can be off on vacation when they can be taking g measures to stop a disease that not only affects people in other countries but also is creeping into our own.

Come on, people!  Do the job we elected you to do!

Join 38 Million of your Closest Friends Tonight

Want something to do tonight?  Be part of the 32nd annual National Night Out.  The idea behind it is to get people out of their homes to mingle, to get to know each other.  It’s intended to help build neighborhood solidarity and friendship and get people involved in crime-prevention activities.  The result is to put the bad guys on notice that we’re fed up with their crimes and are organized and unified enough to take back our neighborhoods.

There are National Night Out events which you can participate in.  Otherwise, grab some lawn chairs and sodas, invite neighbors to join you, and talk about the kids, pets–preferably not about politics or religion–and how you, as a group, can make your neighborhood a safer place.

See you there!

Are YOU Paying for Someone Else’s Vacation Accommodations?

If you rent your home, you may indirectly be doing just that.  Is your rent high and getting higher?  But you can’t move (or find a a place to live in the first place)?  It could be a result of what property owners are doing to make money through such as Airbnb.

Read about the situation at Credo’s “Stand with Sen. Warren: Investigate Airbnb-style rentals.”  If the details, with back-up documentation sources, make you feel that you or your friends or relatives are being taken advantage of, sign the petition at that site and let the FTC know your concerns.
