St. WHO’s Day?

Be careful what you wish today.  Many people blithely say “Happy St. Paddy’s Day,” not realizing that those can be fighting words.  In Britain, “paddy” is a slang term—a derogatory one—for a person of Irish birth or descent.  If an Englishman wants to cut down a person, he’ll call him a “Paddy.”  Some of that usage ended up in America, too.  Also, some people in America either lived themselves or had relatives who lived through English mal-treatment in Ireland and, therefore, resent the term “Paddy.”

True, “Paddy” in the late 1900s was a pet form of the Irish name “Padraig” (not “Patrick”).  In that spirit, many Irish call themselves by that nickname.  But it’s like nicknames for Blacks, Hispanics, and other groups: you can call each other that, but NOT if you’re an outsider.

You don’t know an Irish person’s feelings about the name, and you don’t want to perpetuate a term that some people find offensive.  PLUS, the day IS supposedly honoring a saint.  So I invite everyone to do what I’m doing, wishing one and all a

Water-Wise Wash

Easily save 3400 gallons of water a year.  If you’re an average household, that’s how much you can save just by running only full loads of laundry. If you’re really energetic and want to get some exercise while using even less water and absolutely no electricity, hand-crank machines are still available on the market….

HB,WWW

This week marks the unofficial birth of the World Wide Web, some 25 years ago.

  1.

So, I say this:  Happy birthday, WWW.  For all these many years you’ve been a huge helpmate and an equally large pain in the backside.  We’d be hard-pressed to live without you, but do you have to cause us so much trouble?

End-of-Day Questions

I wouldn’t mind this one for my epitaph:

The Most Effective “Thon”

Ted Cruz did it last September.  30 Senate Democrats did it last night.  Dr. Seuss participated posthumously.  They called it an overnight “talk-a-thon.”

My advice to all legislators: Can the Talk-a-Thon and start a Vote-a-Thon to get things done!

Skip the Next Election?

Why bother voting?  They’re all crooks!  That feeling is seeping into American minds as campaigns are beginning.

My answer lies in the fact that I could be living in North Korea, where, people were urged (?), encouraged (?), forced (?) to vote for a supreme leader this weekend.  Whatever.  90% of the people voted, and all of them–yes, 100%–voted for Kim Jong-Un.  Of course, his was the only name on the ballot, but it was a free election, right?  It expressed the will of the people, right?

Why do I bother voting?  Because, even if I don’t like the outcome, I know it’s a real election with real choices–including the choice to vote.

Turn Off that Oven

Give your oven (and the Earth) a break.  Ovens hold the heat for a long time.  15 minutes before the end of baking (longer for foods taking 40+ minutes to bake), turn off the oven and let the trapped heat finish the job.  And, of course, if your house is chilly, once the baking is done, leave the oven door open so the heat can escape to warm your kitchen.

The Pope is a Thief?!

Pope Francis revealed that he stole something from another priest–his confessor, no less.  He wanted to remember the man who had done so much for him, so, when he died, he took his confessor’s rosary beads. What’s worse, he is still in possession of those stolen goods.

Just think of the scandal: the Catholic Church is being run by an admitted sinner, a human being with weaknesses, someone who makes mistakes (like the recent inadvertent  use of an inappropriate word in a homily). He must be insecure, too, because he asked Catholics worldwide, in a survey, what their thoughts and feelings were instead of steadfastly dictating that “This is the way it’s always been, and this is the way it will remain.”  Now, I ask you, what kind of leader is that for the Church?  What would Jesus do? I wonder.

The McDonald’s Army

[Here’s a tongue-in-cheek quote…or is it a possibility?]

“Think about it, Skipper,” Loving insisted.  “[McDonald’s] is strategically placed all over the globe.  They got more than twenty-six thousand outposts worldwide.  The U.S. Army has fewer than a hundred.  McDonald’s also has more than a million workers.  They’re immensely wealthy.  They’ve already brainwashed our children and addicted them to their products.  They’ve destroyed the health of the human species and made us all fat and lazy.  They could take over the U.S. in a heartbeat.  And after that, the rest of the countries would fall like dominoes.”  (Death Row, by William Bernhardt, p. 238)

The Truth about Nestle Bottled Water

Are you a fan of Calistoga bottled water?  How about Arrowhead, Ice Mountain, Ozarka, Poland Spring, or Zephyrhills?  All are brands produced by Nestle Corp. and marketed in the U.S. Nestle sells more than 65 other brands in countries besides the U.S.  Where can all that water come from? They take it from developing countries, doing great harm to natural resources and forcing the people to buy back their own water.  Take Pakistan, for example.  Nestle has taken so much water that the groundwater is reaching dangerously low levels.  The result is people’s inability to produce and earn a livelihood, pushing them into poverty.  As for the waterless land, whole areas are becoming uninhabitable.  Nestle’s CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe claims that “access to water should not be a public right.”  In other words, if you’re a large corporation, you should have the right to take a country’s water and destroy people’s lives.

If you’re not willing to give up bottled-water, avoid Nestle brands.

Also, sign the petition to Nestle executives telling them to stop stealing Pakistan’s water and driving its people into poverty and starvation.
