A Question for Valentine’s Day

On this Valentine’s Day–a day celebrating love and caring–it occurred to me that, if natural enemies can overcome their fear, distrust, and unloving attitudes toward each other, why can’t humans?

Do You Trust that Contractor?

We’re in the build/repair/replace/remodel season. It’s also choose-a-contractor season. Who to trust? Of course, you’ll ask friends and neighbors, and you’ll read Yelp reviews (may be of questionable value). You finally call some to get estimates (of course, you’ll get at least three).

One more thing: How much do they want up-front? Here’s where you can do an integrity-check. Do they ask for more than the law allows? For example, in California, they can ask no more than 10% of the total estimate, or $1000, whichever is less. That’s the law.

There are two questions to ask yourself, then. One is, what’s the law in your state? The other is, how much can you trust someone who asks for more in advance? That is, if he’s breaking the law, how honest is he?  —  Something to think about.

Organic, Wholesome Food

There are no regulations defining organic or wholesome or many other terms you’ll find on packaging.  To make sure your food is environmentally responsible, find out what trustworthy labelers like the USDA and Food Alliance have to say, or shop at your local farmers’ market.

I Trust our New Republican Congress

That’s a big statement from someone who has spent considerable time lambasting the GOP for acting like spoiled toddlers in their blocking anything based on its being presented by a Democrat or by the-man-who-must-be-stopped, Pres. Obama.

Why my change of heart?  Because this Congress includes new people who, I believe, ran for office because they truly want to make our nation a fair, just, and livable place for all of its citizens and, presumably, they affiliate with the GOP based on its founding principles at the birth of our nation, principles that promised to protect and help the common man.  Principles which have been ignored in recent times.

I believe, too, that these new members have the excitement and fire of being in a new position of influence and that they will use that to convince the rest of their party to re-learn compromise, compassion, and civility.  And how to act as adults.

Over the last few years my nation has been harmed so badly, my fellow citizens driven into so much despair, we MUST have reached rock bottom.  That’s why I believe.  Because I have to.
