Sandwich-Savings

Hungry and about to make yourself a sandwich?  Think about this: A simple sandwich takes about 172 gals. of water to make a loaf of bread and lots more for the meat and veggies to go into it.  Save water by using organic lettuce and tomatoes from a sustainable, water-wise garden and make the sandwich open-faced.Leaf 6

A Fridge-d Suggestion

Use up to 6% less energy by not making your fridge work so hard.  Just clean the built-up dust off the coils a couple times a year.  (They’re usually behind that panel at the bottom.)  For safety, unplug it first.

Free Shade

Plant a tree. A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can reduce your air conditioning bill by 10-15%. Grow a fruit tree.  Then you can relax with a fresh piece of fruit in your own, free shade.

Water-Wise Wash

Easily save 3400 gallons of water a year.  If you’re an average household, that’s how much you can save just by running only full loads of laundry. If you’re really energetic and want to get some exercise while using even less water and absolutely no electricity, hand-crank machines are still available on the market….

More Economic Travel

Help air quality and your wallet when traveling by leaving unnecessary weight at home.  Ask if your hotel or the people you’re visiting have hair dryers, clothes steamers, etc.  Or share such items among those in your traveling group.  Take along travel sized toiletries rather than heavier large sized containers. Pack it all in lightweight, soft luggage. Saved weight in your luggage often means less cost per checked bag at the airlines and always means better fuel-mileage for the airplane.

Earth Tip: Bike-Share…or Just Bike

So what if five San Francisco Bay Area cities, including San Jose (http://www.vta.org/bike_information/bike_sharing.html) and San Francisco(http://www.sfbike.org/?bikeshare), are launching their bike-share program?  Well, it encourages us to leave our car behind and rent a bike for an hour or a day while we run  errands, go sightseeing, or whatever. (More details can be found at http://bayareabikeshare.com.)

This reminded me of some figures I ran into some time ago about what would happen if all Americans aged 10-74 walked or biked half an hour a day instead of driving: we would save 6.5  billion gallons of gas and lose 3 billion pounds off our bodies.

Something to think about…and try.

Earth Tip: Water Wisdom

Do you know all the ways to save money and conserve water in your lawn and garden?  Try these: Water before 7 AM (saves 15-40 gallons of water per day).  Use soaker hoses, drip irrigation, or a sprinkler that spreads large drops of water (mists waste water through evaporation).  Water only 3 days a week (all that most gardens need), saving 35-50 gallons per day. Collect rainwater and gray water (from tub, sink, or wash) for use in gardening.  Landscape your home with rocks, wood chips, or native plants, which use very little water.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Power to the Earth

40% of the electricity used in the average home goes to electronics when they’re powered off but still plugged in.  If we avoided all that phantom load we could close down 17 power plants.  The easy, safe way to “unplug” one or more items is by using a power strip with surge protector.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Walk

What would happen if all Americans aged 10-74 walked or biked half an hour a day instead of driving?  We would save 6.5 billion gallons of gas (think of all the pollution NOT hitting our air) and lose 3 billion pounds off our bodies.
