Today: A Great Holiday to Observe

This morning I observed a holiday that occurs the second Monday in January.  Okay, okay.  So it isn’t official, but the fact that somebody obviously made it up is reason enough to observe National Clean Off Your Desk Day.  And the treasures I found!!!!!

I discovered 14 paperclips, 2 dried-out pens, the Christmas cookie I hid from a visiting child, rusty scissors, an expired Lowe’s credit card, a note to myself about a person who hasn’t yet paid me for an editing job I did for him, 5 pictures I meant to put into the family album I’m creating for my son, several books I’ve been meaning to read (how could I NOT have read Don’t Think of an Elephant, by George Lakoff?), an actual cassette tape, and, of course, a batch of papers I need to file.  Fascinating!

You may want to celebrate this day, too.  No telling how much your life will be enriched (past the three pennies I found).

Want something to do tonight?  Be part of the annual National Night Out.  The idea behind it is to get people out of their homes to mingle, to get to know each other.  It’s intended to help build neighborhood solidarity and friendship and get people involved in crime-prevention activities.  The result is to put the bad guys on notice that we’re fed up with their crimes and are organized and unified enough to take back our neighborhoods.

There are National Night Out events which you can participate in.  Otherwise, grab some lawn chairs and sodas, invite neighbors to join you, and talk about the kids, pets–preferably not about politics or religion–and how you, as a group, can make your neighborhood a safer place.

See you there!

Workplace Bullying

I’ve been thinking a lot about how much bullying is going on.   Maybe it’s the political climate, or maybe it’s because it’s National Bullying Prevention month.  In any event, we see it on the playground, coming through cyberspace, even at our workplace.  It deeply hurts both children and adults.  Today I’d like to address those of you experiencing it at your work.

Does someone at work love to make people around him miserable?  If you feel that way, most likely you aren’t alone. The Workplace Bully never heard of, nor does he care about, the dignity all workers are entitled to.  Confront him, not with a solid punch to the jaw but with a calm request for him to be more reasonable.  Tell him plainly that he makes you feel uncomfortable or humiliated; explain why specific demands he makes on you are excessive.  If you do this in front of others, you minimize the chance of verbal warfare and, at the same time, embolden co-workers who have been suffering silently.  Join with them, in a sort of support group, one that doesn’t feed each other’s anger but keeps you from feeling isolated and helps you find ways to counteract the bully’s actions that don’t turn you into a bully.  Soon your lagging self-respect will return.  Together you’ll make your job site the fulfilling, safe environment you deserve to work in.

Grow Kids and Veggies

Today is National Children’s’ Day (learn about it HERE).   Celebrate your kids, your family, and the day by spending time together planting a winter garden   of carrots, onions, broccoli, peas, potatoes, and other yummy veggies.  Watch as your crops grow.  Then cook them together and enjoy a family meal that you grew yourselves.

Healthy Seniors

Two days from now (May 25) is National Senior Health and Fitness Day.  It’s a day when we older people think seriously about how we’re treating our bodies. The theme for this 23rd annual event is “Improve Yourself for a Better Self.”  All sorts of organizations are planning events we can participate in, including free health screenings and workouts :

  • Area Agencies on Aging
  • Banks
  • Health Clubs
  • Houses of Worship
  • Hospitals
  • Malls/Shopping Centers
  • Park & Recreation Departments
  • Retirement Communities
  • Senior Centers
  • State/Local/Aging Departments
  • And Many More!

You have a couple of days to call one of these or look in your local newspaper to find an event near you.  Be healthy!

A Film Experience Not to Miss

Beautiful new IMAX movie now playing to celebrate the 100th birthday of our National Park Service.  For a taste, watch this short trailer, narrated by Robert Redford.  Then watch for the movie in a theater near you.  I plan to do just that…and continue to enjoy the gift of our parks.

I’ve Been Meaning to Wish You…

Happy National Procrastination Week, offered by The Procrastinators’ Club of America, Inc., whose declared aim is “To promote the many benefits of putting off until tomorrow everything that needn’t be done today.”  Actually, the Week began last Sunday, March 1, and goes through this Saturday.  So we’re half-way through.

As I said, I’ve been meaning to wish you….

Don’t Be a Drug-Hoarder

Stop accumulating those drugs!  Today is National Drug Take-Back Day.  Gather all your left-over prescriptions, drugs that you don’t need, and ones that are outdated (no needles/injectable pens, aerosols, or liquids). Take them to a local collection site to be disposed of properly.  Call your local police department to find a location.

Medications don’t have to be in their original containers.  Also, you just drop them off–no questions about who you are or where you got them.

This cleans out your medicine cabinet, safeguards young children in your family, and prevents the drugs from pollution and poisoning, which happens when drugs are flushed down the toilet or tossed into the garbage.

Do this as soon as you read this, because collections are only from 10:00 am to 2 pm today.

And mark your calendar for this day next year.
