Non-Toxic Way to Kill fleas

Kill fleas on pets and their bedding with non-toxic vinegar (white or apple cider).  In a spray bottle, mix 1 cup of vinegar with a gallon of water (1:16 ratio).  Spray your dry dog, rub it into his fur, and leave it on. (May take a couple of applications.)

All the Gods Agree

Wars are fought over religion. The Supreme Being is called by different names. People distrust, belittle, hate, or kill others because of their religious beliefs. Yet, it all boils down to a simple rule that appears in the holy books of all major religions. Some call it the “Golden Rule.” (Put the cursor on the chart and use Ctrl X while scrolling to enlarge so you can see everything.)

How Computers and Phones Kill Wildlife

Move over, conflict diamonds.  Now we’re aware of conflict minerals.  Here’s what’s happening (from the Wildlife Conservation Society):

Gorillas and other wildlife are being killed and trafficked as a source of food for miners and militia members in conflict zones including the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The devastation is so great that Grauer’s gorillas were recently listed as critically endangered.

So-called “conflict minerals” – tin, tantalum, and tungsten – are used in common products in the U.S., like smartphones and jewelry. In 2010, Congress included a provision in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act requiring the Securities and Exchange Commission to shine a light on American businesses sourcing precious minerals from armed mines contributing to violence, human trafficking, and wildlife slaughter. So far, the evidence shows that U.S. efforts are making a difference and weapons and violence are being eliminated from more mining sites in the DRC. Now, Congress is considering repealing this law.

What Kind of People ARE They?!

Why kill children?  I know the Taliban wanted revenge and they believe they’re fighting a holy war.  What god might they be following who would approve of going room-to-room in a school to kill children of senior military officials and any other students who got in the way?  Certainly not the peace-loving Allah!  What did the youngsters, aged 6-18, do “wrong,” except be born into military families?  If the bombers and gunmen made their “point,” why continue to endanger others by taking hostages and planting explosives around the perimeter of the school?  Yes, those IEDs did prevent outside help from Pakistani police and soldiers from coming to the rescue of the children; but how many more people will stumble on them and be killed?  That must be their plan.

What kind of people are these killers of more than a hundred innocents?  And how do we revoke their membership in the human race?

Follow-Up on “Is there Something I’m Missing?”

I MUST add one more bit of questionable logic to Monday’s (10/20/14) posting on situations in our daily lives that make little sense.  Yesterday I saw that TV commercial yet again.  It’s for an ambulance-chaser–er, I mean, law firm–in which anyone who has been in an auto accident and has been either seriously injured or killed is urged to call their office.  Now, I know that long-distance companies have improved greatly over the years, but does the land-of-the-afterlife have phone service?

Responsible Weed-Killing

Weeds starting to bother you?  They’re the downside of the Spring we’ve been looking forward to.  So, get rid of them.  But don’t hit them with toxic weed killer.  Instead, spray them with vinegar right from the bottle and watch them wither.  Kill weeds, not the Earth.

Imagination as a Preservation Tool

An imaginative Harbor Master at Moss Landing solved a problem without bloodshed.  The sea lions there, although fun for us to watch and to bark back at, are destructive to the boats. They damage boats when they climb up on them to sun themselves, and their weight can actually sink a boat.

Too often, a problem like that is dealt with by killing off animals.  Instead, this Harbor Master installed nine of those tall balloon-figures with blowers in their bases that cause them to “dance.”  The movement scares the sea lions away from the boats but doesn’t harm them or destroy their habitat.

Proof that, with imagination, critters and humans can share what Nature offers us.

Syriaous Madness

The people of Syria are heavy on my heart. I don’t know the right thing to do. Will a group of madmen get the message and change their ways if we bomb them? Will they kill more of their own people chemically if we do nothing? Does the U.S. have the right to enforce international moral agreements, and have we done that so often that the rest of the world expects us to be the world’s police force? Does the U.S. have a moral obligation to protect human life elsewhere—and is our doing more killing protecting that life, considering that some innocents are bound to be harmed? Or is that, too, a form of madness? Are there NO other answers?

I call on everyone to pray, meditate, send good vibes to the universe, or whatever you do when you search for an answer to a problem too big for you to handle alone.  Concentrate not just on solving the seemingly unsolvable dilemma but also on the Syrian families—especially the children—who are, through no fault of their own, caught up in the middle of it.
