Free Trees for Your Community

Trees, nature’s air purifiers, are inexpensive and easy to plant.  In my area (San Jose), there’s an organization called Our City Forest. It helps people choose the right tree for their location, demonstrates how to plant it, and gives it to to the person for free (donation requested).  If the person is older or disabled, they’ll even send out someone to plant it for them.

Does your community have such an organization? If not, propose it. See Our City Forest details at www.ourcityforest.org so you can offer your city some information about how a successful program can operate.

Some Info. if You Drink Nestles Brands of Bottled Water

You may not even know that you do.  Nestle brands include Arrowhead, Calistoga, Deer Park, Ice Mountain, Ozarka, Poland Spring, Zephyrhills, Perrier, San Pellegrino, and Pure Life.

Nestle pays $524 a year (that’s all!) to fill bottles that cost us $2.00 each.  They take the water from the San Bernadino National Forest, draining our public watersheds.  They claim that they can do that because water doesn’t belong to anyone, ignoring the fact that the PUBLIC NATIONAL forest that is trying to recover from drought is sustained by that very water.  Topping that, they’re taking the water on an expired lease!

A group called Courage Campaign has taken Nestle to court over this in what, so far, has been a two-year battle.  Nestle is spending an unimaginable amount to fight this–at $2.00 a bottle they can afford it.

If this bothers you as much as it does me, boycott all Nestle products, especially water, and let Nestle know why you’re doing it. You can find their phone number and a contact form at https://www.nestleusa.com/info/contact-us.

We’re talking about OUR water and OUR forests!

Wanna Go Forest Bathing?

Okay.  I admit it.  I’m a tree hugger.  I love being out in a forest.  It relaxes me and helps me understand my place in the universe.  Apparently, I’m not all that  crazy; forest bathing is catching on in the U.S.  Watch  this video and see if it’s right for you.

The Price of Two Olympic Events

How much is an Olympic ski run worth?  The destruction of a species?  How about a 500-year-old forest?

South Korea is clear-cutting an ancient forest to build a ski run–to be used for only four days (two ski events) for the Olympic Games.  Sure, they can plant more trees later..and wait 500 years for them to get to where they are now.  In the process, they are destroying what is almost the last remaining habitat of the Eurasian Otter, the Leopard Cat, the Marten, and the Flying Squirrel, putting these four species into danger of extinction. This is the fulfilling of their promise to make these Winter Olympics “Green Games”?

There is time to stop this unconscionable destruction from happening.  Sign the Avaaz petition that says,

As concerned citizens from across the globe, we call on you to stop the destruction of forest on Mount Gariwang for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, and to protect what remains of this forest that has been a sanctuary for over 500 years. We urge the IOC to ensure that all Olympic Games truly live up to ideals of sustainability and environmental protection.

Our Forests and Ourselves

When I read yet another news story about a corporation making more profits for themselves by destroying forests, especially our life-sustaining rain forests, I’m painfully reminded of today’s Thursday Thought:

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” —  Mahatma Gandhi

Furniture-Buying Tip

Buying some pretty new wood furniture?  Or other wood items?  First, find out where the wood used for the item is coming from.  If it’s from a rain forest, buy something else.  Our dwindling rain forests are essential to life on Earth.
