A Pun for the Day

Warning: I Feel Punny

Sometimes I just want to take a day off from the seriousness of the world.  Because I’m a word-person, on those days you’ll have to put up with a pun or two.  Remember that you were warned!

#1–When fish are in schools they sometimes take debate.

#2–To write with a broken pencil is pointless.

#3–(One more, because it’s one of those days.) Police were called to a daycare, where a 3-year-old was resisting a rest.

Good.  It’s out of my system.  I’ll be all better tomorrow.

A Debatable Movie that Came True

Ever see the movie “The Great Debaters”? About a teacher (Denzel Washington) who did the unthinkable at his mainly Black Texas college—he formed a debate team.  In 1935, people were more inclined to shake their heads at the endeavor than to believe that the team would actually go on to challenge Harvard.

Since then, Harvard has formed the Harvard Debate Diversity Program. This year, Southern Black students from Atlanta debated Harvard–and won!

It’s encouraging to watch these students–and Harvard–progress.

(If you haven’t seen the movie, rent it.)

Controlling Guns, Respecting Rights

I’m tired of the gun-control debate!  This morning’s streaming news (scrolling across the bottom of the TV screen during the news broadcast) had nine headlines not related to sports, weather, or medical.  SEVEN of those were about people being shot. 1) A man was shot in Salinas.  2) People were shot on Interstate 80 in San Pablo.  3) A 73-year-old man shot his wife.  4) Two masked men used their guns in a robbery in Pacifica.  5)  A boy on a bike was shot in Salinas.  6)  A man was shot while sitting in his car with his nine-year-old child in East Oakland.  7) Four masked men shot off a gun during a home invasion/robbery in San Mateo.

These incidents all happened within a day in a fairly small area, an area not known for any more violence than any other.

I’m not arguing here for gun control that would take away anyone’s rights…well, the rights of any gun-trained/respecting, sane, level-headed, law-abiding, cool-tempered, life-respecting individuals.  If anyone can come up with a workable plan to protect their rights and the rights of gun-victims without gun owners giving up a small amount of what they feel the Fourth Amendment entitles them to, for the greater good, I’d love to see it enacted right away.

Yes, I’m tired of the gun-control debate.  It’s gone on far too long.  It’s past time for action instead of talk.

Debatable Entertainment

I watched the whole Democratic debate!  I wasn’t able to get through any more than an hour of the Republican debate.  What was the difference for me?  With the Republicans, I lost patience with rudeness, name-calling, ethnic/sexist comments, and basic back-alley fghting.  I was learning the candidates’ personalities but not their stands, plans, and views (except, of course, that all democrats–especially Hillary Clinton–are unintelligent, evil demons).

The Democrats were far different.  They showed respect for one another, even when they had a direct-confrontation disagreement. They attempted to stay on-topic most of the time.  They showed a friendly rivalry.  Actually, to me, they seemed like people who wanted to win us over with what they felt are their strengths, not entertain us with an episode of “Political Tuesday-Night Fights.”

The elections are far enough away to allow time to win the minds and hearts of voters.  But unless the Republican candidates stop acting like spoiled, unruly children, this voter won’t bother trying to listen to them any longer.

Even The Donald is no longer entertaining.
