Binding, Limiting, & Control

In today’s Thursday Thought quote, Marianne Williamson reminds us of exactly what it is that binds, limits, and controls us.

OJ Simpson and the System

I’ve been in parole hearings (a victim can bring a non-participating supportive friend).  Both times the person was denied parole, despite the victim’s urging release, the inmate’s exemplary, peaceful, productive life Inside, and a show of respect  and remorse during the proceedings.

Then I watched the OJ Simpson hearing.  He spent a lot of time doing something that isn’t supposed to happen in a parole hearing–re-litigating the case.  The premise is that the case has been heard and judged and should not be re-tried during the parole hearing.  That’s in the past.  But  the Board allowed it.

Also, he showed no remorse, accepted no guilt.  In fact, he blamed everyone else for what happened. He lied about having led a non-violent life, forgetting all of the many cases of domestic abuse, which further showed his inability to accept responsibility (normally one of the criteria for release).  And he became angry when answering one of the Board members.  Yet, the Board somehow decided that his history of abuse against women was behind him and that he was now under control of his emotions, despite his outburst against the Board.

Some argue that his sentence was too severe, in light of the sentences (and non-sentence of one) of the other men involved.  If so,  that’s another reason our penal system needs to be reformed.

But so should how parole boards function–consistently, logically, and fairly for all.

Controlling Guns, Respecting Rights

I’m tired of the gun-control debate!  This morning’s streaming news (scrolling across the bottom of the TV screen during the news broadcast) had nine headlines not related to sports, weather, or medical.  SEVEN of those were about people being shot. 1) A man was shot in Salinas.  2) People were shot on Interstate 80 in San Pablo.  3) A 73-year-old man shot his wife.  4) Two masked men used their guns in a robbery in Pacifica.  5)  A boy on a bike was shot in Salinas.  6)  A man was shot while sitting in his car with his nine-year-old child in East Oakland.  7) Four masked men shot off a gun during a home invasion/robbery in San Mateo.

These incidents all happened within a day in a fairly small area, an area not known for any more violence than any other.

I’m not arguing here for gun control that would take away anyone’s rights…well, the rights of any gun-trained/respecting, sane, level-headed, law-abiding, cool-tempered, life-respecting individuals.  If anyone can come up with a workable plan to protect their rights and the rights of gun-victims without gun owners giving up a small amount of what they feel the Fourth Amendment entitles them to, for the greater good, I’d love to see it enacted right away.

Yes, I’m tired of the gun-control debate.  It’s gone on far too long.  It’s past time for action instead of talk.

Take Power Today

Today is a day when all Americans are urged to take control of their and their country’s destiny.  It’s National Voter registration Day.  If you haven’t registered, do it today. It’s so easy, you can do it online…right now.  Search “register to vote online [your state]” and take two minutes to fill out the form.

Some people want to wait to see who the Presidential candidates are.  Wrong approach if you really want to have a say in who is our next President.  We have more power when we decide who the candidates will be, which means voting in the Primaries.  Why have to choose between two people we don’t really want when the best person for the job was beaten in the Primaries–and we didn’t cast our vote then?

Do it. Take power today.

The Reins of Control

Today’s Thursday Thought gives us a glimpse at what forgiveness really is.

What I MUST Do Today

I’m planning my day:

Buy a Gun (Vote)

Of the 45 senators who voted NO on the gun control legislation in Congress last Wed (4-24), 42 had received money from pro-gun lobbyists.* Some of the donated money was given as little as three weeks before the vote, when it seemed probable that extending background checks would pass.
