Helping

The Buddhists have a saying about helping and its effect. In today’s Thursday Thought quote, I offer it for your consideration.

Cancel 2020 or Not

When I started reading this Thursday Thought offering, I thought the idea was crazy. The more I read, the more I grew in understanding, hope, and determination. No, it’s not at all a crazy idea.

New Serenity Prayer

We can all use a bit of serenity about now. I’ve heard it said that the basis of all true religion is believing that “There is a God and I’m not him.”  That’s the spirit of this updating of the well known Serenity Prayer.

A New Serenity Prayer

by Jim Manney

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the people I cannot change,
which is pretty much everyone,
since I’m clearly not you, God.
At least not the last time I checked

And while you’re at it, God,
please give me the courage
to change what I need to change about myself,
which is frankly a lot, since, once again,
I’m not you, which means I’m not perfect.
It’s better for me to focus on changing myself
than to worry about changing other people,
who, as you’ll no doubt remember me saying,
I can’t change anyway.

Finally, give me the wisdom to just shut up
whenever I think that I’m clearly smarter
than everyone else in the room,
that no one knows what they’re talking about except me,
or that I alone have all the answers.

Basically, God,
grant me the wisdom
to remember that I’m
not you.

Amen

Produce Shade for Someone

You do things often that you hope will be of value. Then you wonder if it was worth it, because you don’t see change or whatever positive results you hoped for. Today’s Thursday Thought quote is for you.

“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” — Warren Buffett

How to Move Mountains

Actually, you don’t need to move mountains, as today’s Thursday Thought quote points out. There’s a much simpler way.

Change

Today’s Thursday Thought quote explores the origin of change:

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” — Barack Obama

Time Change Blues

Anyone else feeling like this? My body just wants to go to bed AND get up at 8.

Some Silliness: Changing Our Clocks

Yup. It’s that time again. We must “Fall Back” an hour this weekend. For those of us who are confused by this twice-yearly ritual, here’s a guide.

Our Changed Nation

Today’s Thursday Thought is something that has been bothering me greatly.

You Think It’s HOT? Get Used to It!

90 million of us are searching for relief from exceptionally high heat. Even those who deny that the Earth is warming are heading into air-conditioned rooms and guzzling cold water.

Problem is, this is only the beginning. Read “Historically Unprecedented Summer Heat” Will No Longer Be Unprecedented.

The World Health Organization tells us, “Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year, from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress.”  —  That seems like reason enough for us to do something.  What? Read the article.
