I’m not going to tell you WHO or WHAT to vote for, but I am giving you some advice to ensure that your vote will truly make a difference.

I’ve noticed the all-or-nothing attitude of people around me and people in general. That is, vote totally one party or another because they’re conservative/liberal/not socialist/progressive/whatever. Or vote for one candidate because they’re anti-abortion or pro gun control or some other single issue.

One problem is that no party is fully conservative/liberal/whatever. In the olden days they were more unified in a political direction. Today, though, both major parties have several wings.

Which brings me to the other problem. Voting straight party ticket does not guarantee that your main view will be pushed. Sometimes, for example, a representative will be against your view on civil rights and someone from the other party would have been more in line with your view. Or the candidate who is stanchly for that one view may go against your other important issues.

The best way to vote, then, is to figure out what you think would make this overall a safer, happier, more just country, then evaluate each candidate’s previous actions and stated goals, and vote accordingly, no matter what party they belong to. And examine your own moral stance not just over one issue but all that affect the common good.

In short, vote to strengthen the basic American values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

If you’re a regular reader, you know I don’t get into politics. This isn’t meant to be political It’s just that I’m heartsick at how people in high positions are treating others verbally. Name-calling, belittling them as people, criticizing their viewpoints as stupid or anti-American, saying negative things opposite to what the person said about them until that person did/said something that went against their wishes.

None of this serves us as human beings or as Americans.  In fact, it demeans all of us as we repeat lies, half-truths, and nasty verbiage.

I have a campaign slogan I want ALL political candidates to adhere to: MAKE AMERICA CIVIL, DECENT, AND RESPECTFUL AGAIN!

A Good Time To Tell Them What You Think

Seems like those Presidential candidates don’t have a clue! Like all they want is to get elected. They don’t seem to care about injustices caused by our broken penal and immigration systems.  It’s okay to try kids as adults, then throw them into adult prisons to harden and learn new criminal skills.  Homeless, elderly, disabled people–all that matters is money and power, not lives and human dignity. If an issue strikes a moral chord with us, we should exert our influence.  Now is the time to contact those candidates, letting them know what’s important to us and what they need to address if they want our vote. Remember, too, that they read newspapers, so write a letter to the editor. And social media, so post there.  If you get a positive response, encourage others to express their opinions.  If a candidate won’t listen, give your vote to someone who will.

ANOTHER Darned Election???!!!

ANOTHER DARN ELECTION!  It never comes out the way I’d vote.  It’s just a waste of time and money.

Actually, it will be a waste if you don’t vote.  Even if there’s only one issue or candidate you really care about, make your voice heard.  Better still, take some time to get acquainted with more of the propositions and candidates.  They will determine how we treat our fellow human beings—family, workers, the poor, even us voters.  Find out about them from impartial sources who have thoroughly researched them, like the  League of Women Voters (www.smartvoter.org), and carefully read through the official Voter’s Guide from the Registrar of Voters. Think carefully, not emotionally or following what any other person or biased group says. Make up your own mind, then vote.

Why bother?  Because not voting would let a small handful of people (those who DO vote) make decisions you’re forced to live with.

The Republicans’ Choice (Not Trump)

I don’t know who the Dems favor but it’s obvious who most of the Republicans want.  Actually, I think they should stop the debates and caucuses right now and admit who is foremost on their hearts and minds.

After all, who is mentioned most often (no, not Trump)?  Who has never done anything wrong in his political life?  Who could unify the Party 100%? Who is the only one never to have uttered a single negative comment against any of these candidates?  Who could straighten out our country and our world within a single term?  Who is always spoken of in reverential terms?  Who is…let’s call it what it is…PERFECT?

Ronald Reagan, of course.  Sure, he’s dead.  But now that we’ve had our first Black President and have come close to our first woman President, why not our first dead President? Besides, after listening to the Republicans speak about him often, I think he might just have the power to come back from the dead.

So why not just nominate the guy and be done with it?

(Here’s an update of yesterday’s blog on politicians and pits.  I received comments that I should publish my response to a comment, using it as a regular blog so more people see it.  That’s what I’m doing today.  I hope you enjoy it.)

Let’s see….Trump would go for Ban Deodorant. Hillary might go for Secret. Carson, who wants to apply his education to everything, might go for Degree. Rubio would give Suave a try. Sanders would fall back on the common man’s brand, Old Spice. Fiorina would buy Lady Speed Stick. Christie would use Arm and Hammer. Bush would use any brand his dad and brother don’t use. All Republicans would try Axe.

I don’t see anyone going for Dove.

Fence out those Immigrants!

I live in California, a state that has a large population of immigrants coming in illegally.  I should, I suppose, jump on the bandwagon of the Presidential candidates who insist on building a fence to keep them out.  It’s expensive, they all agree, but worth it, say some, or will be paid for by Mexico, claims one.

I don’t understand.  Aren’t those candidates aware that many people come in through Canada, too?  Or overstay their visa or HB work permits?  What about them?  A fence won’t help.  Also, haven’t they seen the statistics that show that  2009-2014 more Mexican immigrants have been choosing, on their own, to return to their families in Mexico than have come into the U.S.?  In addition, those reports show that the theory that they’ve been returning because of our bad economy is false–it has always been better economically here than where they came from.

Come on, candidates, make that bandwagon actually count for something–like plans to solve poverty, under-education, discrimination, bigotry, and violence in our nation.
