Guilt-free chocolate? The pounds may stay, but not regrets about how that yummy stuff got to us. The same with coffee, tea, rice, sugar, juice, honey, wine, flowers, crafts–all sorts of things that often reach our homes through the mistreatment of people in other countries. Many, often young children, work under harsh conditions to support their families. But it’s the only work available. The FAIR-TRADE MOVEMENT aims to change this, to provide employment, fair wages, decent conditions, and money that goes back into their communities for health and education. This is not “free trade,” which is political, among nations, but “fair trade,” valuing the well-being of people. Participate by buying products on-line (Google “Fair Trade”) or at Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Cost Plus, Peet’s, Starbucks, and elsewhere. Watch for the “Fair Trade” symbol on packages. Ask the manager. Make your interest known. Then, maybe just one more nibble wouldn’t hurt….

Coffee and Life Lessons
All too often we overhear someone laughing at or making fun of someone else’s misfortune or troubles. It’s especially disturbing to hear it among teens, who are on the cusp of an adulthood that should be more understanding and compassionate. Most of us do or say nothing, figuring that it won’t do any good and might cause trouble.
A North Carolina woman encountered this situation one day at Starbucks. Her reactions–and, more importantly, her actions–are refreshing. I wish I’d thought of that.

This Law is Weird but Necessary
Who would think that a law would have to be on the books against putting a video camera into a public restroom? You’d think it was common sense and reasonable respect not to do so. Guess not. It happened twice in a Walnut Creek, CA, Starbucks–the same Starbucks. There is a suspect, Jacob Turner. However, embarrassed, mortified victims must come forward to make the case against him strong. I’m not sure I’d admit to being a victim.
Anyway, this is, on the surface, a silly law, and it may be hard to enforce; but, unfortunately, people being people, it’s needed.
Starbucks & Animal Welfare
