A Cool Way to Save Money

Be cooler in summer and save up to 25% annual energy costs.  Get summer shade by planting deciduous shrubs and trees on the south and west sides of your house. When you want the warmth (in the winter), the sun peeks in through the north and east.

Who is “Buying” that Law?

Wonder about the status of a bill in Congress or who’s paying to push it through? Go to www.MapLight.com.  There you’ll find out about bills in the news recently and read a snippet of what they’re about.  Click on the “Interest Groups” or “Companies” tab to see a chart of contributors and amounts they’ve paid. The “Contributions” page lets you find out how much a particular group has contributed to a specific legislator.

There’s a wealth of information on this website.  It’s one all voters should take a look at, especially before the elections.

Saving Can Be Cool in the Summer

Here are a few hints to keep your house–and so yourself–cool this summer: 1) Open up the window coverings when sunlight isn’t streaming through, then close when the sun hits the windows. 2) Use light-colored, loose-weave mesh shades to let in light and keep out heat. 3) Apply reflective (also called low-emissivity, or “low-e”) coatings to the outside of windows. Then, sit back, relax, and enjoy the comfort, knowing that, by not using your AC, you’re saving energy and money.

Stealing the Season

‘Tis the season…for stealing your identity and financial information. There’s a large number of malicious apps out there anxious to trap you by filling your In-Box with offers of fantastic prices and discounts. Beware! Here are a few tips:

  1. Watch out for texts that contain spelling or grammatical errors. Legit retailers pay good money to make sure their promotional materials don’t have such mistakes.
  2. Avoid third-party app stores. Stick to real, established ones, like Apple and Google.
  3. Look at the URL. Be sure it starts with HTTPS. If not, forget it.
  4. If the prices are too fantastic to be true–and items are not being sold from the trunk of a car–it’s a scam.
  5. Shop only from retailers you’re familiar with and ones you trust.

In short, make sure you don’t bestow the gift of your money and private information on scammer.

Save Bread (Both Types)

So much bread goes stale, then into the garbage. It’s a waste of money and natural resources to grow the grain to make it. Check out the video How to Waste Less Bread.  It gives tips on keeping bread fresh and on ways to use it when it goes stale.

ANOTHER Darned Election???!!!

ANOTHER DARN ELECTION!  It never comes out the way I’d vote.  It’s just a waste of time and money.

Actually, it will be a waste if you don’t vote.  Even if there’s only one issue or candidate you really care about, make your voice heard.  Better still, take some time to get acquainted with more of the propositions and candidates.  They will determine how we treat our fellow human beings—family, workers, the poor, even us voters.  Find out about them from impartial sources who have thoroughly researched them, like the  League of Women Voters (www.smartvoter.org), and carefully read through the official Voter’s Guide from the Registrar of Voters. Think carefully, not emotionally or following what any other person or biased group says. Make up your own mind, then vote.

Why bother?  Because not voting would let a small handful of people (those who DO vote) make decisions you’re forced to live with.

Those Darned Truckers!

Who hasn’t thought, “There goes another one of those massive pest-trucks, clogging up my highway”? I’m guilty. I won’t think it again, thanks to this video.
