Fabric softeners are expensive, unhealthy (designed to leave chemical residue in your clothes), and not eco-friendly (one chemical ingredient going down the drain contaminates our water supply; another is on the EPA’s hazardous waste list). Instead, use ½ cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle to soften and freshen your laundry.

If you’re really energetic and want to get some exercise while using even less water and absolutely no electricity, hand-crank machines are still available on the market….
Laundry tip: try using dryer balls in your dryer. Yes, there is such a thing. There are homemade wool ones or (gulp!) commercial plastic ones (non PVC). They last through 50 loads of laundry, keeping all those chemical-laden sheets out of the landfill. Besides, they’re more fun.

Shorten laundry drying time and save energy. Add two dry towels to the load. They’ll draw moisture out of the other items, and the redistributed moisture takes a shorter time to dry.
