I was thinking about those problematic DACA kids  Yes, they were brought here with no say in the matter when they were very young, but, yes, they are here illegally because their parents came her illegally. Yet, consider this: our government told them that they could stay in this country indefinitely if they admitted to their status, signed up, gave their personal information, and paid a fee.  Thus, they became DACA kids and could continue with their college and employment and life out in the open, without fear of discovery.

Let’s see.  The kids did what they were asked, and the government accepted their money for it. The agreement was completed.  Isn’t that a signed, sealed, and delivered CONTRACT?  It meets the criteria for a contract.

My question is, then, if a DACA kid is deported, can he sue the U.S. Government for breach of contract?

It’s a phrase that has recently become popular, although it is, by no means, new.  It goes back to 1955, when the Quakers used it to urge our country to stand up to all forms of totalitarianism, especially fascism. (It was the title of one of their pamphlets.)

Today, it refers to holding a deep belief in what you say about injustice and using all nonviolent means to have people hear you.  It’s standing up and speaking up, often (but not always) to government.  “Speak truth to power” takes the courage of your convictions.

Too often the phrase is used to justify saying something to Authority that people in authority don’t want to hear.

But, for many, it’s intention is the same today as it was in the 1950s: to change our old thinking about violence and injustice; to reject both; and to embrace peace and justice.  I like that idea very much.

Recall? Be Safe

Another batch of vehicles is being recalled!  Seems like it’s happening every day.  At this point you’d have to have a car as old as mine (2004) to be safe.  But, no, recalls are going back farther than that.

To be safe, I looked up my Dodge van.  It had an old recall I never heard about and a problem hose that I’d replaced long ago.

I suggest you check your car.  The easy way is to go to the government website, safercar.gov.  The page you need is at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues.  Just put in your make, model, and year and you’ll learn if there are any recalls you should be aware of.  Please do it today. I’d like my readers to be safe.

A Government Shut-Down is a Good Thing

Let the government shut down. It would be a good thing. It will show the silly majority of lawmakers that, just because they pass a law or program, that doesn’t mean we’ll let them put it into action. It would be good, too, for people on welfare, food stamps, Medicare, and other government entitlement programs so they’d learn that they shouldn’t always depend on staying on the Gimme Track—then they’ll all go out and get jobs, food, housing, health care, and anything else they need, on their own—because they could do it if they really made an effort.  Yes, it might affect those brave veterans who’ve defended our country, but only for awhile, and their families were paid well while they were off to war, so they should have saved enough to get them by.  Besides, it’s not as though we’d be setting a precedent for the U.S. defaulting on our debt; it happened on George Washington’s watch.  Yes, a lot of good would come out of this.  So it’s time that we show those guys what happens when a vocal, stubborn group like us doesn’t get our way.

So, I hear that sales of the book 1984 recently have jumped 5800% (yes, fifty-eight hundred).  Apparently, the cause is recent leaks about government’s spying on citizens, which is a main plot line in the book.  I won’t get into whether the whistle-blowers are right, moral, traitors, or heroes.  I just want to thank them for a valuable, unintended by-product: getting people to read and think.  Now, THAT’s a public service!
