Halvsies: Old Idea Worth Repeating

Doing “halvsies” is a good idea.  Use only the quantity of shampoo, detergent, cleaners, etc.  needed to do the job. If half of what you’ve been using works, next time try half of that. Repeat until you get the minimum workable amount. This trick leads to benefits for your wallet and the Earth.

Purse Clutter Blues

Some months ago I cleaned out my purse, tossed out un-looked-at scraps of paper, and made a resolution: I decided to choose “no” when asked if I wanted a receipt at the gas pump, ATM, and self-serve checkout.  Also, I signed up at my bank for paper-free, online options for billing and paying bills and receiving monthly statements.  I’ve had no problems as a result. Now I help save trees, cut down on litter, and avoid worry that lost receipts and statements will end up in the hands of identity thieves.  Unfortunately, somehow all that extra room in my purse has been taken up by other junk.  Oh well.  At least the Earth will be in better shape if not my purse.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Vinegar isn’t Just for Salads

Lay in Costco-sized vats of white vinegar.  To avoid substances that are toxic to your family and planet, use white vinegar instead.  www.vinegartips.com gives 1001 uses for white vinegar (cleaning home and car; deodorizing; killing germs; eliminating laundry stains and odors; controlling weeds, ants, slugs, fleas on pets; soothing sunburn and insect bites; cooking; etc.).

Earth-Friendly Tip: Have Fun

This summer, plan family recreational activities that use renewable rather than non-renewable energy.  Hike one of the trails around the city. Take a rowboat out on a nearby lake.  Bike around to neighborhood garage sales.  Play board games stretched out on your lawn.  Talk to each other.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Power to the Earth

40% of the electricity used in the average home goes to electronics when they’re powered off but still plugged in.  If we avoided all that phantom load we could close down 17 power plants.  The easy, safe way to “unplug” one or more items is by using a power strip with surge protector.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Earth Hour

It’s happening now, wherever 8:30 PM local time arrives.  People are turning off their lights for an hour in solidarity for working toward a sustainable future.  This year’s participants are expected to include 152 countries on all continents and landmarks in 7000 cities.

Turning off the lights is only a symbol, of course, but this annual event (7 years old) really is having an effect.  Last year, 35,000 American Girl Scouts were inspired to go into their community and install 132,141 energy-efficient light bulbs.  The former president of Botswana has organized to plant 100,000 trees in devastated areas.  In Russia, 100,000 people are expected to sign petitions to change current laws related to forests, including industrial logging.   Most of all, people are acknowledging the fact that all of us together need to work on saving our not-inexhaustible resources and keeping our Earth healthy for future generations.

DOUSE THOSE LIGHTS TONIGHT 8:30 – 9:30.
