Dangerous Shake-Ups of Our Own Making

The science is now clear: fracking DOES cause earthquakes.  For an explanation, see “How Oil and Gas Disposal Wells Can Cause Earthquakes”  and “Fracking and Earthquakes.”  Yes, the earthquakes triggered by fracking so far have been either mild or moderate.  However, scientists suggest that it could cause a major, even catastrophic, one (see “Could Fracking Cause a Major Earthquake?“)

This fairly new way to pull oil out of the ground is helping our country toward energy independence and bringing down gas prices.  But at what cost to the Earth and, ultimately, to human life?

School Clothes Shopping Idea

School clothes–two more Back-to-School ideas that are earth-friendly:  Shop for school clothes made out of organic cotton or hemp. Look for recycled-plastic totes.  Shop at thrift stores, which have like-new and even new items people bought then discarded.

More Down-to-Earth Back-to-School Ideas

Last Saturday I gave you a few ways to get the kids ready for school while being kind to the Earth.  Here are a few more: Shop for school clothes made out of organic cotton or hemp. How About “Earth Month”?

April is a very earthy month, with Earth Day (today) and National Arbor Day (Friday the 25th).  PLUS, we’re in the midst of the season of renewed life, Easter.  It’s a marvelous time to think about what we can do for our home, the Earth.  No room in your yard for another tree?  In my area we have Our City Forest—you probably have such an organization in your area, too.  Sign up with them to help with planting projects in your city.  Stroll along the banks of a local river, lake, or pond, carrying tools to pick up trash.  Spend time around your home, building a birdhouse, creating a habitat in that unused corner of the yard, or planting non-thirsty plants.  Take your family to an Earth Day event, or follow up on an eco-activity you learned at one.  This month, begin a new habit: at least once a day get out of the house and smell the roses and the fresh air, listen to birdsongs, feel cool clean lake water on your toes, bite into a mouth-pleasing, messy orange, watch cloud-swans glide through clear, blue skies.  Then, determine to keep all these available for future generations.

Responsible Weed-Killing

Weeds starting to bother you?  They’re the downside of the Spring we’ve been looking forward to.  So, get rid of them.  But don’t hit them with toxic weed killer.  Instead, spray them with vinegar right from the bottle and watch them wither.  Kill weeds, not the Earth.

Earth Hour–Nothing to Make Light Of

It’s happening now, wherever 8:30 PM local time arrives for you.  People are turning off their lights for an hour in solidarity for working toward a sustainable future.  This year’s participants are expected to include more than 7,000 cities and 150 countries on all continents.

Turning off the lights is only a symbol, of course, but this annual event (8 years old) really is having an effect.  One year, 35,000 American Girl Scouts were inspired to go into their community and install 132,141 energy-efficient light bulbs.  The former president of Botswana organized to plant 100,000 trees in devastated areas.

Participate by turning off all lights tonight 8:30 – 9:30.  Yes, all lights, including the TV and phone.  Join with others to acknowledge the fact that all of us together need to work on saving our not-inexhaustible resources and keeping our Earth healthy for future generations.

DOUSE THOSE LIGHTS TONIGHT 8:30 – 9:30.

Leave this World in Style

Planning for the inevitable?  Think about going back to how things were done until a century ago (to stop grave-robbing).  Have a green burial: no embalming, so no earth-harming formaldehyde; and caskets and shrouds made of biodegradable materials–maybe your favorite blanket.  Be laid to rest in a park that’s dedicated to keeping the surroundings in a natural state.  Be a style-setter, your final act showing your friends what “earth to earth” means to our planet.  The bonus is that you save about half the cost of a regular burial.

Shopping Hint to Gift the World

Here’s an idea to follow this shopping season and throughout the year: Pre-cycle.  That is, before you buy think about which items have the most waste in terms of excess packaging, natural resources used, and useful life-span before taking up room in the landfill. Then buy accordingly, choosing from all the gifting possibilities the ones that help protect Mother Earth, the world we live in.

Don’t Can; Just Store

Dust off those old canning jars you know you won’t ever use for actual canning. They’re an excellent choice as reusable containers.  They come in various sizes to meet your left-overs needs and are safe to use in the freezer.  They’re nice because you can see inside (in case you forget to label them), and their shape means that they take up less room than plastic bowls. Toss them into the dishwasher for cleaning (thorough and won’t melt like plastic).  They’re sturdy so they’ll last far longer than plastic containers. Plus, they’re people-friendly (contain no no BPA).

So, don’t feel guilty about your FTC syndrome*.  Feel good about helping the Earth by reusing something that will last and is not made from petroleum products.
