Health Warning–Sunscreen Dangers

We wear sunscreen to protect our skin from the sun. Trouble is, much of the stuff is bad in itself. Some chemicals in it can irritate the skin or cause skin allergies, especially those with ingredients that let the sunscreen sink deeper into the skin so it stays on longer. And we can’t help but inhale some of the spray we put on (not good for the lungs). We know our bodies are taking in these chemicals because tests detect them in our urine, blood, and even breast milk.

The FDA is considering regulations to minimize sunscreen hazards. Eventually sunscreens will be safer. Meanwhile, why not consider alternatives? For example, Zinc oxide and titanium oxide stay on the skin’s surface and aren’t absorbed into the body. Or use an organic, non-toxic product made from natural ingredients. Of course, you can also wear a hat and protective clothing and stay in the shade. But the waves are sooooo inviting….

Whatever you do, be aware and avoid those harmful sunscreens. It’s a good practice for you AND keeps those harmful chemicals from polluting the Earth.

Medical Question

Every once in awhile something strikes me as particularly odd. Today is one of those days.

I’m used to all the warnings included in drug commercials and have always wondered about if I’d take the chance of acquiring one of those conditions they warn about or even die if I took their drug.

Now they’ve all added a warning: “Do not take [their drug] if you are allergic to it.”

What???!!!   Why would we?

Duh!

A Law to Save Children and Adult Lives

CA has just passed a law that other states should have on their books.  That is, schools must now stock epinephrine pens for students and staff who suffer a life-threatening allergy, such as the common ones to peanuts and bees.  Every second counts when the potentially deadly allergy symptoms appear.  911 is great, but an ambulance takes time to arrive.  People who know they have these allergies should carry epinephrine, but what if they forget or lose it on the playground or haven’t replaced outdated medication?  Accidents happen.  Schools should be prepared for all emergencies, including this one.

If your state doesn’t have this law, you can get the ball rolling by promoting one.  For help (and to see if your state does have this regulation or is considering it), go to http://cqrcengage.com/aafa/epinephrine.

This is important to the lives of our children.  Go to that link NOW and get started!
