Zombies vs. Humans: Science Doesn’t Lie

[It’s weird-mood day for me–brain is getting soggy from all the rain I’m not used to here in CA– so I offer you this offbeat information.]

The zombie apocalypse won’t take long.

A new article in a peer-reviewed student journal finds that the zombie hordes would take Earth’s population down to a mere 273 survivors in 100 days.

I Have a Dream, Too

 .

                          SWEET DREAMS

I had a dream—like Martin’s—
But in my dream
Cats were leashed and dogs roamed free,
The President was chosen by God,
All days were sunny, with rain only at night,
And the whole world loved chocolate.

In that dream
My friend was interesting, not rich or Black,
People talked to Gramps, not to me about him,
Wheelchair basketball was on Monday night TV,
            And dinner was fair-trade chocolate.

Then I saw
Doctors fighting to save all lives,
            Wardens taking none,
            Soldiers idly playing checkers,
Now that bullets were just Hershey Kisses.

All that empty space:
Soup kitchens, with no clients to serve,
            Sweatshops replaced by homes,
Jails, since the Rule became Golden,
            Plus cups half-filled with cocoa.

I had a dream.  Like Martin,
When I wake
I refuse
To leave it behind.

Gotcha, Telemarketers!

It works!  It actually works!  And it’s free!

This is NOT a commercial.  I’m just sharing my delight.

I’m one of those people who still have a landline.  I have my iPhone, too, of course.  But it’s the home line (which I still need for purposes I won’t go into) that has been driving me crazy with cold-calls, scam artists, and telemarketers, especially ones with only a recording on the other end to yell at or humans who won’t give up.  As you likely know, yelling does no good whether at man or machine.

Then I signed up with a company who stops robo-calls after one ring of my phone so I don’t have to deal with them.  They charge for the service to cell phones but not to landlines. Now I smile when my phone rings once and stops, and I think, GOTCHA!

I don’t miss the frequent calls from somebody “from Microsoft” asking me to turn over control of my computer so they can “fix” the dangerous bug in it.  Or the fake charities and telemarketers.  So far I’m not getting those calls on my cell, but eventually I know I will, at which time I’ll pay the $5 a month to add my iPhone.

If you’re interested, the company is Nomorobo.  You can find them at https://www.nomorobo.com.

All I can say is, It works for me!

Is an Exhausted Doctor Treating You?

“‘Study after study shows that sleep-deprived resident physicians are a danger to themselves, their patients and the public,’ says Dr. Michael Carome, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group.”  Yet a new rule would change medical interns’ maximum of 16 hours without a break to a possible 28 hours.

Read the pros and cons of this change at Medical Interns Could Work Longer Without A Break Under New Rule  and decide for yourself.

Then, if you think this would be a situation you wouldn’t want yourself or a loved one to face, add your name to the No 28-Hour Shifts for Novice Doctors petition.

College Students Live Rent-Free in Retirement Home

Would you choose to live with elderly people, many sick and dying, if you were a college student?  How about if you lived there rent-free?  How would the residents react?  This is a Dutch experiment that is so successful it’s being tried elsewhere.  It’s an interesting mix of generations living together for mutual benefit.  Considering how poorly treated (and ignored) so many elderly Americanism are, I’d like to see this Humanitas program widespread in our country.

The Blessings of Steve Jobs

Remember ten years ago, when life was so much harder?  We couldn’t check on the whereabouts of our friends anytime we wanted to, read our Facebook postings or email without turning on our computer, catch up whenever we wanted with a movie or TV show we missed.  We had to call people and talk to them rather than texting.  If we wanted to prove our point  in a conversation we had to wait to go to the library or do a computer search so we could show family and friends that we were right. We had to turn on a radio or other device to play music, use a camera to take pictures, go to our Game Boy to play games. Why, we didn’t even have a personal assistant like Siri.

And we had to carry on conversation at the dinner table.

Granted, not all of these features sprang fully grown into our world.  The smart phone, introduced by the Japanese in 1992, had far few features than the modern device.

But what would our world be like if Steve Jobs (or someone like him with the same drive and creativity) had not given birth to the iPhone a decade ago?

Happy 10th birthday, iPhone!

Dead Trees and Money

Here’s something for my usual Sensible Saturday posting that is a slap across the brain…or wallet.

Re-Modeling the First Lady

No doubt about it–Melania Trump has a nice figure.  The question is, though, does she show too much of it for a First Lady?

I’m not talking about her modeling pictures or those old ones tossed around social media.  I mean now, today, as she becomes First Lady.

She usually appears in low-cut tops and form-fitting (a bit tight) outfits that emphasize her “attributes.” And she stands like the model she is, so that her ample bosom and curvy behind are emphasized.

Who cares?  We shouldn’t, I know.  But she represents our government.  She needs to understand that perception is now important.  Won’t what some heads of state see as a lack of modesty reflect poorly on our President and our country?   Many religiously conservative heads of state have trouble just with American women not covering their heads, thinking them immodest and disrespectful.  What about the programs to foster children and families she says she wants to promote–will she be taken seriously or as a debutante dabbling in a pastime?  Considering her expensive, designer wardrobe (e.g., $3000 Near Year’s Eve dress and costly suits), can she speak for the poor of our country?

All I’m suggesting is that she tone it down a bit, consider the  changes as a needed form of diplomacy.  Even if daughter Ivanka ends up acting as First Lady for most things, she’ll still be the President’s wife and often appear with him in public as our First Couple.

I’m not being old fashioned or misogynistic.  I’m just being realistic.

Shadows and Light

I’m determined to be optimistic in 2017.  So when I saw today’s quote, I was inspired and decided to offer it to you as today’s Thursday Thought.

“Never fear  shadows.  They simply mean there’s light shining somewhere nearby.” — Ruth Renke
