What to Do Today
“Real generosity is doing something nice for someone who will never find out.” ~Frank A. Clark
That sums up the spirit of today’s National Do Something Nice Day.
Use your imagination. Go big, medium, or small. Here are some suggestions: Send flowers to someone for no reason, with a card that says “Just Because.” Invite that office mate who eats lunch at her desk each day out to lunch with you. Give an extra big tip to someone who serves you. Mow a neighbor’s lawn or take out their trash with yours. Help someone struggling with grocery bags get them into their car. Ask a disabled person if they need help opening a door or getting their wheelchair into their car. Smile at a stranger as you pass them by. Or do something nice without letting the person know who did it.
Seems to me, this is a good way to end a hectic work week.

Ways to Keep your Christmas Tree Out of the Trash*
It was so beautiful–all glittery and inviting and fragrant. Alas, it’s time to part with your memory-making Christmas tree. Of course, you can dump it unceremoniously out on the curb. But if you’re in a more creative mood, go to http://www.care2.com/greenliving/7-ways-to-keep-your-old-christmas-tree-out-of-the-trash.html to find some ways to keep your tree and truly make it part of your family.
Invisible Workers
IT’S MAGIC! Mail appears and trash disappears. Somehow the electric company knows how much power I use each month. After club or church gatherings, the grounds become clean overnight. Fresh vegetables are abundant at the market. A burger just shows up at the drive-through window or a choice of goodies in the cafeteria cases. Funny, I didn’t see anyone do a thing. It was all done by the “invisible people”—workers we take for granted because they always do their jobs.
This year, expand Labor Day into a life-long habit. Make it a point to watch for the person who delivers mail, reads meters, picks up trash, prepares food in the cafeteria, hands over that burger. Be aware of grounds-keeping individuals and housekeepers at the hotels you stay at. Notice the human being who tends the store’s vegetables. In other words, recognize the workers. Make a special effort to thank them. Let them know that you appreciate the part they play in making your life easier. Feel free to shock them with a compliment. They deserve it.
Earth-Friendly Tip During Party Season
It’s party season! Cut down on entertainment-trash. Buy a set of reusable dishes and flatware for parties—settings in various patterns from thrift stores are fun. Use name tags on guests’ glasses and cups. Be sure to avoid any Styrofoam.
