Go Dark for an Hour

It’s happening now, wherever 8:30 PM local time arrives for you, in over 160 countries around the world and on all continents. People are turning off their lights for an hour in solidarity for working toward a sustainable future. 

Turning off the lights is only a symbol, of course, but this annual event (a dozen years old) really is having an effect.  One year, 35,000 American Girl Scouts were inspired to go into their community and install 132,141 energy-efficient light bulbs.  The former president of Botswana organized to plant 100,000 trees in devastated areas.

Participate by turning off all lights tonight 8:30 – 9:30.  Yes, all lights, including the TV and phone.  Join with others to acknowledge the fact that all of us together need to work on saving our not-inexhaustible resources and keeping our Earth healthy for future generations.

Sisters in Widowhood

I was prepared to feel sorry for myself.  This is my first U.N. International Widows’ Day.  I lost my husband last November.

Then I started enjoying the good memories of a 35+ year marriage.  And I realized how much luckier I am than many widows in the world.  I live in a free country, in safety, with enough resources to sustain me and then some, and a family–small, but here for me.

And I look at other parts of the world, where widows suffer immensely.  Their land taken from them.  Family members evicting them from the homes or even killing them. Shamed because their husbands are dead. Having to take their children out of school to work to support the family.

The U.N. is trying to solve these problems, but it will take a long time.

I’m deeply saddened by the plight of my sisters in widowhood.  I greatly miss my husband, but I am so grateful for my own life and for the fact that the U.N. is working toward better lives for my international sisters.

Help for Homeless Vets

Kudos to the VA!  Their Palo Alto facility now has an Employment and Housing Resource Center to serve homeless vets (remember that at least 20% of the homeless in our country are veterans).  It’s part of their five-year plan to end homelessness among vets.  The Center, open to all vets enrolled in VA healthcare, has free electronics that are essential in job-hunting–computer, Internet, and printers–along with staff help and employment guidance.  In addition, it offers resources related to finding affordable housing.

Many of these services aren’t new with the VA.  What is new is the fact that they’ve been consolidated into one Center where a person can go to get help in rebuilding his or her life after putting it on hold to serve our country.  Good going, VA!
