Boring Rain? Go Classics

It’s drizzly weather, but the kids need something to do.  Show them a thought-provoking classic movie. Afterwards, talk about what they saw–what went on and why–and relate it to real people in real situations today.  Encourage questions and reactions.  “Could some kid I know face going to prison for killing his dad?” (Twelve Angry Men).  “But poor people today can get jobs and not have people disrespect them” (Grapes of Wrath).  “How dumb! People can’t be accused of stuff just because of their color!” (To Kill a Mockingbird).  Find these films at the public library. Scan the television guides, Netflix, Hulu, On Demand, etc. for others: Ox Bow Incident and Diary of Anne Frank show up often.  Check video rental stores for The Hiding Place or Schindler’s List.  Your friends who are movie buffs probably have a film they’d recommend and even lend you.  Gather the kids and start the movie.

Now, where did I put that bowl of popcorn?

An Idea: Do You See the Light Bulb Over Your Head?

Did you stock up on those old light bulbs and are still using them?  Think about this: Replacing a single (yes, one) light bulb with fluorescent, which lasts almost 10 times longer, can save ¼ ton of coal, not to mention all the sulfur dioxide, other pollutants, and acid rain that coal would have caused the Earth and us to have breathing and other health problems.

Quenching Compassion: A Plea to Readers

If you’ve been a reader of this blog for awhile, you know that I believe in the power of the human family when we join together to make this world a better place for all of us.  So I’m calling on your help now.

My state (CA) is burning up.  We have so many individual wildfires that they’re combining to make larger, more deadly, destructive ones.  And hot weather with blustery winds.  And a drought, with little or no rain.

People are losing everything they have.  They’re learning that they must find someplace else to live until they can rebuild their homes–and that insurance may cover only 10% of the cost.  Pets and livestock are lost or consumed by flames. Human lives are lost, both residents and fire-fighters.

What I ask of you is to send the human spirit of compassion and unity into the universe, asking for en end to the fires, adequate quenching and rejuvenating rain, and safety for all involved.  If you believe in prayer, do that.  Otherwise, send out good vibes, happy thoughts, and poisitive feelings.  Expect results.

This isn’t magic, just family ties.

Our Forests and Ourselves

When I read yet another news story about a corporation making more profits for themselves by destroying forests, especially our life-sustaining rain forests, I’m painfully reminded of today’s Thursday Thought:

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” —  Mahatma Gandhi

Furniture-Buying Tip

Buying some pretty new wood furniture?  Or other wood items?  First, find out where the wood used for the item is coming from.  If it’s from a rain forest, buy something else.  Our dwindling rain forests are essential to life on Earth.
