Confronting you is the garage-corner with those electronic gadgets your spouse says must go! Guess that means a dump-run, although those items are poison to the environment. Stop! There are alternatives. You can put old electronics to better use than polluting the landfill. Donate office machines to charities which do needed repairs then sell them to support their programs. Give cell phones and laser or ink-jet cartridges to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, which supports children’s and veterans’ programs with them. Give a cell phone to a battered woman, a disabled man, or an elderly couple, showing them how to keep it charged and how to dial the free emergency number, or to organizations that do that for you. For example, the YMCA gives refurbished phones to domestic violence shelters and victims and to the elderly and disabled. The options are there. Mother Earth will thank you, and so will the vulnerable people you help.

You Mean We Have to Talk?
Applebee’s wants to force us to talk over our meals. Well, on Tuesdays, at least. They’re thinking about establishing “No Tech Tuesdays,” when they’d ban electronic devices (except, of course, the new tablets they’re installing at their tables). If we don’t have use of our gizmos, what are we supposed to do while we eat? If they expect us to have a conversation, I fear that they’ll have to retrain many of us.
I admit, though: as a person who enjoys talking with my meal partner but often has to listen to game noises and business dealings with Asia coming from a nearby table, it sounds like a good idea to me.
Age-Appropriate Electronic Readiness
#@%$*!!! electronics!!!! This morning I tried to do a recommended Windows update and got the message that I needed to go into the System Readiness Tool and do something. I followed directions…no luck. I called on “Help” and no luck. I don’t have things with the same title they’re telling me to look for. I AM SO FRUSTRATED!
Then I saw this in an email from a friend and realized that I need to find the Old Fogey Readiness Tool. Happy Monday, all…..
Earth-Friendly Tip: Power to the Earth
40% of the electricity used in the average home goes to electronics when they’re powered off but still plugged in. If we avoided all that phantom load we could close down 17 power plants. The easy, safe way to “unplug” one or more items is by using a power strip with surge protector.
