Vegan or Not–A Great New Drink

TO MY VEGAN FRIENDS (and other lovers of Bailey’s Irish Cream): Bailey’s has decided to, as they say, “get with the times” and offer a vegan liqueur.  Their dairy-free drink is made with the essence of crushed almonds and almond oil. They want to appeal to consumers by offering a healthier option that is also eco-friendly.

Why is it eco-friendly?  Consider this–it takes 220 liters of milk to make Bailey’s each year, and 38,000 cows to produce that milk.  Those cows have to keep having calves–imagine being pregnant most of your life!  Those calves are taken from their moms right after birth so the milk can go to cream for Bailey’s rather than to the new-borns.  It’s a cruel process.  In addition, cows are harmful to the environment (e.g., emitting methane gas and odors and causing water pollution).

So, vegan Bailey’s?  I’ll drink to that!

Making Fun of Myself

So, I’m one of those super-pro-environment people–avoid pesticides, treat food-animals humanely, work toward a real, honest, agreed-upon, and followed definition of “organic.”  That sort of thing.  When I saw this video, though, I realized that I know people like this–and they won’t find this video humorous.

Oh well.  Just know that I’m laughing at myself, as well, while standing firm on my eco-friendly beliefs.

Cure for Frosted Windshield

Don’t waste plastic or paper trying to keep frost from your windshield.  Instead, be more earth-friendly by coating it the night before with a mixture of 3 parts white vinegar and 1 part water.  Wake up to a clean, frost-free car window.

Dryer Balls?

Laundry tip: try using dryer balls in your dryer.  Yes, there is such a thing.  There are homemade wool ones or (gulp!) commercial plastic ones (non PVC).  They last through 50 loads of laundry, keeping all those chemical-laden sheets out of the landfill.  Besides, they’re more fun.

Shopping Hint to Gift the World

Here’s an idea to follow this shopping season and throughout the year: Pre-cycle.  That is, before you buy think about which items have the most waste in terms of excess packaging, natural resources used, and useful life-span before taking up room in the landfill. Then buy accordingly, choosing from all the gifting possibilities the ones that help protect Mother Earth, the world we live in.

Time/Energy Laundry Tip

Shorten laundry drying time and save energy. Add two dry towels to the load. They’ll draw moisture out of the other items, and the redistributed moisture takes a shorter time to dry.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Power to the Earth

40% of the electricity used in the average home goes to electronics when they’re powered off but still plugged in.  If we avoided all that phantom load we could close down 17 power plants.  The easy, safe way to “unplug” one or more items is by using a power strip with surge protector.
