Attract birds, pollinators, and other critters that you can enjoy watching for years to come and, at the same time, promote the food chain that we humans depend on. “Neighbors to Each Other”

A TV news reporter described people’s responses to the suffering of those caught in Super Storm Sandy: “It shows how we are neighbors to each other.”  Ambulances from Indiana pulling into Atlantic City.  Texas, Indiana, even Canada sending power-workers to restore electricity.  Shelters accepting pets, which are of great comfort to frightened children.  Neighbors helping each other search for some little object to keep the past alive while sharing the heartache of destroyed homes.  Near-strangers dividing up their quickly dwindling supplies to help each other get through the day or night. Even news trucks letting people use their power supply to charge their cell phones so loved ones can be in touch and reassured.  All this in addition to the organizations and churches sending members to help wherever they can.

It does show people being neighbors to each other.  It shows humanity at its best.

A Mantra for America

As I see the news of riots, division, and unrest, today’s Thursday Thought comes to mind.  It’s a lesson for our country and our world. We’d all do well to make this our mantra for the future.

“THERE IS MORE POWER IN UNITY THAN DIVISION.”  — EMANUEL CLEAVE

They tried to merge their two very different families and build a loving life together. Results were mixed. But events like her near death, being grandparents, and his series of illnesses drew them closer together. A Special Occasion for Rosie and Me

Happy 5th birthday to Rosie, my loving companion who has seen me through a very tough year. She has always known when I needed cuddling, protection, doggy-love, a walk in the fresh air, feet warmed, a chuckle, or a lick or two.

❤️

Double It!

Today’s Sensible Saturday eco-idea: Look for labels containing “2x” (or “3x”) when shopping for items like cleaning products Doubling the concentration saves on packaging and shipping.  Just in terms of liquids used in the U.S., 2x would mean 141 million pounds less plastic produced yearly and 19 million gals. of diesel fuel saved each year.

A Day to Make a Difference

Saturday, Oct. 28, is national Make a Difference Day, when people commit to volunteer in their community.  They help out at a charity, join a clean-up crew at a park, form a group to do buildings and grounds maintenance around the church, or get together with others to repair and paint the home of a person who is physically or financially unable to take on the task.  Others work on a less visible, more personal level by devoting the day to visiting people at a nursing home, taking a lonely aunt to dinner, hanging out with that teen who needs an adult ear to listen to him, or building a habitat in their back yard to nurture the wildlife which shares that yard.  It really doesn’t matter what a person does, because all of these activities make a difference in the lives around him.  What will you do?

No Path to Peace Anywhere, Anytime
