I can’t believe that colleges have come up with new rules to apply to sporting events, including a ban on boo-ing. Young adults attend college. When they were young children, they were taught (I would hope) that boo-ing their opponent was not only rude but emotionally hurtful to those on the receiving end. Now that they’re all but grown up, they need a RULE to force them to respect their fellow human beings? That’s disheartening!
What this makes me think is that political correctness is the ruling meme of today!! To me it shows a strong lack of families and parents teaching the children how to act in public. All in the name of being nice! Children need to learn the difference between right and wrong, the right and wrong place to act out!
I like the last part of what you say best. Many kids don’t learn to consider their audience; therefore, they think a specific behavior is good no matter where they are, who they’re with, and what the occasion is. Many have been on the receiving end of booo-ing and have forgotten how demeaning and bad it felt. Go to kids’ games at school or in leagues and there are parents who encourage boo-ing–not the best role models. These same parents don’t curb their colorful language or spare the insults, either, essentially training their kids that it’s okay to insult and demean others. When these kids get to college, their excuse is that it’s “all in good fun”–but fun at the expense of others…?
