Honey Boo Boo at 15

After being exposed (not on purpose) to the phenom Honey Boo Boo, I can imagine what she’ll be like at age 15.  Picture these bits of conversation between her and an adult visitor (not her mom, who wouldn’t notice):

Do your homework, Honey.  — Donwanna.

You’re going to wear that to the formal? — Godahell.

Don’t you like your dinner?  —  Pigslop.

Why’d you turn all the stuff in open containers from the fridge upside down on the kitchen floor?  — [Smile, sideways head-bob.]

You look cute in that outfit.  —  [Smile, upturned eyes, pose.]

You’re awfully quiet.  Are you on drugs, Honey?…Honey….  [Smile, pose.]

Dear, dear child.  You have such a future!

Corporations Paying Less Tax

Corporations stopped paying HALF OF THEIR TAXES after the recession.

After paying an average of 22.5% from 1987 to 2008, corporations have paid an annual rate of 10% since. This represents a sudden $250 billion annual loss in taxes.

U.S. corporations have shown a pattern of tax reluctance for more than 50 years, despite building their businesses with American research and infrastructure. They’ve passed the responsibility on to their workers. For every dollar of workers’ payroll tax paid in the 1950s, corporations paid three dollars. Now it’s 22 cents.

Obama’s Biggest Crime

What has our President done to us! It’s a crime!  It may seem insignificant to many people, but it’s an affront to this language-loving person’s ears. It began with Candidate Obama and has permeated his Presidency, affecting politicians, commentators, and persons on the street.  It invades our parties and pastors’ sermons, our instructors and our excuse-makers.  That is, beginning sentences with the word “look.”

If you haven’t noticed, now you will.  Wait until Leno does it, or your City Council member, or your dad or friend, or even Obama himself.  Now that you’re aware, it may very well make you want to stick chewing gum in your ears.  When someone asks why Bazooka bubbles are covering your lobes, just say, “Look, I don’t want to hear it anymore!”

Earth-Friendly Tip: Lasting Items

Have you abandoned the resolutions you made in December and need a new one?  Here’s a suggestion:  “This year I will buy products that will last and rent items I’ll use only once or twice, and I will take pride in the resulting extra space in my home and at the landfill.”

U.S. Wealth Inequality: Our Ranking

Only FOUR OUT OF 150 countries have more wealth inequality than us.

In a world listing compiled by a reputable research team (which nevertheless prompted double-checking), the U.S. has greater wealth inequality than every measured country in the world except for Namibia, Zimbabwe, Denmark, and Switzerland.  — Paul Buchheit, Common Dreams

[This is a surprising, and disheartening, ranking.  No wonder we have so many people and groups protesting the way wealth is distributed in our economy.  And no wonder we have so many homeless and near-homeless among us.]

Resolutions into Actions

[Something to bolster your New Year’s resolutions: ]

“The single largest pool of untapped resource in this world is human good intentions that never translate into action.”  — Cindy Gallop

[Especially good intentions like being kinder and more tolerant with each other and helping people make better lives for themselves.]
