Education is Unimportant

The UC Regents seem to think a piece of paper is more important than education.  This week they said they wanted to charge more for courses that were “not needed,” thus cushioning the UC system’s bottom line.  They were referring to courses a person might take to advance his learning, to get a better education, even though they are not classes specifically required for a degree.  Now, I remember having to take classes that didn’t make me a better teacher or writer but were required by my major, minors, and credentialing program.  Then there were the “unneeded” courses that made me a more aware, open-minded human being–ones that have been priceless preparation for both my professional and my private life.

I’m delighted that Gov. Brown talked some sense into the Regents.  I’m scratching my head over how they could have even considered such a more.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Tee Shirts

Gift-buying Guide: When buying tee-shirts, choose ones made of organic cotton, bamboo silk, switchgrass,  wool, or recycled materials. Each regular cotton tee takes 1/3 pound of pesticides to make. In fact, 25% of the world’s pesticides are used by the cotton industry.

Good News: President Doesn’t Matter

The economy will continue to improve whether Obama or Romney wins.  That’s what the economists are saying.  Supposedly, the economy is cyclical.  Looking into history and the periods after Presidential elections, these experts report that, each time, the economy continued in the direction it was going before the election.  (However, I remember when it plunged over the years a certain person was President.)

I’m happy to hear this, of course, since the economy has been inching UP rather than down or remaining stagnant.  What I’m NOT happy about is sitting through all those political arguments insisting that a vote for Mr. X insures recovery while a vote for Mr. Y means economic disaster.  What a waste of my listening time!

Hope for Congressional Peace & Progress?

I’m encouraged by how Pres. Obama and N.J. Gov. Chris Christie are treating each other.  They’re at opposite ends of the political spectrum–as Gov. Christie has clearly and bluntly pointed out often during the campaign.  Yet, when disaster struck, Mr. Obama acted with speed and grace, and Gov. Christie accepted his help graciously and with gratitude.  He felt comfortable reaching out to ask the President for what N.J. needed, and he received personal assurances AND rapid follow-through.

If this hard-core Democrat and never-say-die Republican can come together for the good of the people, can’t the rest of our lawmakers do the same?  No matter who is elected tomorrow, let’s hope that the example set by Obama and Christie does NOT go unheeded.  Let’s get some cooperation–the lack thereof which has caused so much grief–that will take our country into full recovery.

Earth-Friendly Tip: Responsible Laundry

Dry clean responsibly.  Hand-wash or spot-clean first.  If dry cleaning is needed, go to a shop which reuses bags and hangers that you return to them and a place which uses processes that are “clean” and “green.”

Thoughtful Thursday: Reflecting on my Reflection

“Man can see his reflection in water only when he bends down close to it, and the heart of man, too, must lean down to the heart of his fellow; then it will see itself within his heart.”  —  Hannah Moore
