Personal Note: Goodbye, Riley

This weekend my companion for 15 years passed away. Riley was a devoted companion who kept herding us, family and guests alike (she was a Border Collie). She helped me care for my husband, Frank, for a couple of years, watching that I did his infusions and medications right, nuzzled up to him as he struggled to breath, which made him smile, and comforted me these last two years without him.

Today I’m very lonely, having lost Riley and, with her, my last daily connection with my husband. Eventually, I will honor her by rescuing a dog that won’t replace her but will be a loving part of my life.

If you’re a dog-lover–or ever had a pet that was part of your family–you understand.

My Veteran

I honor, respect, and thank all veterans. But this is the one I love.

Proud Navy man. Loving husband and father. Overall good person.

I miss him but celebrate him today, on Veteran’s  Day.

Happiness Up to the Wife

Apparently, “happy wife, happy life” is true.  Granted, the study looked at people age 50 or older, but I’d bet that it extends into younger marriages–and even maybe into how we treat each other in other relationships.

There are several reasons for this happiness factor (as well as the reverse: miserable wife, miserable life). They include the differing ways men and women are raised, societal roles, and the fact (surprise!) that men don’t communicate their feelings and women do (what a revelation!).  The cure for this disparity is better communication–like that’s gonna happen in most man/woman relationships….

For details of this study, read the Huffington Post article “Study Finds that ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life‘ is Pretty Dead On.

Only Married Women Can be Raped in CA?

“No, Your Honor, I couldn’t have raped her because she wasn’t married.”  In California, this is a valid defense, thanks to an old 1872 law.  Julio Morales admitted that he’s sneaked into a woman’s bed, pretended to be her boyfriend, and had sex with her until the light hit his face and she realized it was not her boyfriend.  She shoved him off of her and  reported  the incident to the police.  As his defense, he cited that old law.  He never impersonated her husband, he said, just her boyfriend.  The judge agreed and dismissed the charges.  Apparently, only married women can be raped in our fine state.

To be honest, this is a vast oversimplification.  But it goes without saying that it’s well past time to change this law.
