Focus on Kids, not Parental Sexual Orientation

Why (according to a University of Melbourne study) are kids of same-sex parents healthier?  One possibility cited is that same-sex families tend to get along better.  Another is that because same-sex parents are likely to share more child-rearing duties, basing them on skills rather than traditional gender roles, the children grow up in a more harmonious household.  These factors lead to increased health for a child.

But how about in other areas–temperament, behavior, mental health, emotional role, and self-esteem?  Those children scored the same as ones in the general population.  Except that kids with same-sex parents suffered due to the stigma of their parents’ sexual orientation.

What hurts most, apparently, is a child’s growing up in a single-parent household, especially with as single mother, who tends to struggle more financially than a single father.

In my opinion, this shows that a child thrives best in a home in which parents work at their marriage, share their talents in caring for a child, and maintain a harmonious household, whatever the sexual orientation of the parents.  No sensible person believes anymore–considering all the studies and anecdotal evidence–that homosexual parents raise children to be homosexual.  So why not concentrate on how kids are being raised and not add stress to their lives by focusing on what their parents do in the bedroom?

Pope Restates the Obvious

It’s good that Pope Francis stated again that the Church must accept homosexuals into the fold, as they, too, are part of God’s family.  He says we should accept and not judge any person who follows God, even, I assume, homosexual priests (gasp!).

Well, duh!  Homosexuality is a “sin” when practiced.  If a person is, within himself, a homosexual–or tax cheater or liar or Tweeter of unsavory pictures–he has the inclination but doesn’t “sin” until he actually practices that inclination.

Priests take a vow not to enter into sexual relationships.  Which is more important, that one is inclined toward AC or DC or that he breaks that vow?  If he keeps his vows and goes about a life of priestly work and doesn’t flaunt or promote his sexual preference–who cares?  If God does, isn’t that between God and him?

Let the Church discipline and reject those who fail to keep their vows, not just a group that “real” men somehow feel threatened by.

Gay Boy Scouts

If a Scout didn’t acknowledge that he’s gay, whether or not he’s sexually active, how would the leaders or troop know his orientation?  If he’s just as honorable as other troop members, doing what is his best for God and country, obeying the Scout Law as best he can (he and the others ARE human and ARE kids with limitations)?  If he strives to help others, keep himself physically strong, mentally awake, and, within the limits other young Scouts have (background, socio-economic factors, family life experiences), morally straight?

It’s probably this last one that Scout leadership feels a gay boy can’t comply with.  If so, then any Scout–homosexual or heterosexual—who is having sexual urgings should be banned, or all should be admitted until they show they can’t abide by the Scout Oath and Law.

Why is it impossible for a gay youngster to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent (the Scout law)?  Certainly, generations of closeted gay Scouts have passed the test.

Is Scout leadership afraid that a gay boy will seduce others or have their gay-ness rub off onto others?  If so, they don’t trust the heterosexual Scouts to be adhering to the Oath and Law.  Those Scout-failures, then, should be kicked out.

Or maybe the fear is that a gay Scout might organize a sex-orgy at a Jamboree?
