Maybe Our Lent Should Be Changed

Many people observe Lent.  It’s a great shot in the rump for our weight-control, which is what many of us use it for.  We give up sweets and snacks, hoping to reduce our body-weight.  This year, let’s concentrate on reducing a different kind of weight in our world, the damaging heaviness of violence, shown in unkindness, hostility, cruelty, disrespect, and selfishness.  The Institute for Peace and Justice has developed a “Pledge of Nonviolence” we can adopt as an individual, family, or group of any sort.  With it, we promise to 1) respect self and others, 2) communicate better, 3) listen, 4) forgive, 5) respect nature, 6) play creatively, and 7) be courageous. All are perfect Lenten activities.  Then, when people ask that old question, “What did you give up for Lent?” you can answer, “I gave up being a cause of violence in my world.”

Homeless Kids Packed into a Stadium

Here’s a fact about homeless kids that shocked and deeply saddened me.  The last line tells a vital truth.

Goodall Identifies Danger

Jane Goodall gives us today’s Thursday Thought.  She has seen so much concern and apathy that I think she knows what she’s talking about.

Parades and Respect for Our Military

Please, Mr. Trump, no military parade.  In authoritarian regimes, such a parade emphasizes tanks, bombs,  and military personnel trained to look adoringly toward their leader and salute him as they pass by his grandstand.  In the U.S., we stand for something different–people, not machines (whether mechanical or trained humans).  The kind of parade the President wants is the former, not the latter.

I think such a parade shows disrespect for the men and women who serve us so unselfishly.  They are the ones who should be honored, not the military might and threat of our country.  And such respect should be afforded them daily and sincerely, not for an hour during a glitzy parade that doesn’t reflect who they are both as people and as our protectors.

Instead of a parade, Mr. President, how about putting the large amount of money it would cost into housing for homeless vets?

What a Waste!

“Consumption has become a habit, a hobby and a sport” (Evy McDonald, Spending  Money as if Life Really Mattered).  True.  I recycle but don’t  always buy items with the “chasing arrows”/recycled content label.  I should prepare more of my own meals (cheaper, healthier, less wasteful).  Then there’s all those gadgets in my kitchen—what do I actually use and which really make life easier?  I can go through my home and give away stuff that’s no longer useful or that I’m keeping out of compulsion or the status I think they give me.  I can use the library rather than accumulating books.  And visit museums, art exhibits, etc. instead of buying more dust-collectors. As an experiment, I plan to set aside a time in which I try not to waste a single thing all day.  That will help care for both me AND the Earth.

The Power of Play

These people are just clowning around–or are they?  (Thanks to Audria  Schmidt for this.)

The Cat’s Meowwww

Treat your cat to home-grown catnip or organic grass. It’s healthier for Tiger and saves you enough money to buy him a toy mouse made out of recycled material.
